I'm reading The Simulacra and some of Kongrosian's dialogue is some of the best I've seen yet by PKD. I'm enjoying the book immensely by now, of course. I'm hoping I encounter another mindfuck story like TIme Out of Joint, though.
I need new manga to read too but wew that is much more difficult to find.

Inda's good, series falls off a bit after the first sequel, very benevolent though
Livership Traders has a pirate protagonist and he's anything but nice lol
Outside of that maybe try The Scar or On Stranger Tides.

Nautical fantasy is my favourite genre/setting and it's very hard to find new stuff in there, last thing I read was Daughter of No Nation which is worldhopping nautical fantasy but it mainly manifests itself as a courtly drama so that's no good.

>Something which really stuck out about Cold Iron was the variety of roles which women played. It is a very common and very valid criticism of older farmboy fantasy novels that women characters are often relegated to love interests, courtesans, or the local innkeeper’s wife. Actually, there are characters who fit those descriptions in this book, but the point is that they aren’t confined to them. Women can just as easily be badass swordswomen, super-powerful mages, or intelligent generals and academics.

Science fantasy doesn't mean what you probably think it means. It refers to stuff like Star Wars, which has the trappings of scifi but the substance of a fantasy series. To really be true scifi it needs a component of speculation, a "what if" at the core of it driving the story. If all the emphasis in the story is on "world building" or adventure, and not exploring a central idea or concept in an alternate or future setting, then it's probably more of a science fantasy.

Started reading Redemption Ark by Alastar Reynolds after the first book and it went well for 3 chapters, just when I realized that all the main characters and all the fucking ship captains are women. Now I am not a meme frog loving autist and usually don't give a fuck about shit like this but this time it kinda made me loose interest in the book (not that I was extremely interested in it before that).
So, help me understand it anons, is there something wrong with me or did Reynolds turn full blown feminist after the first book?

Unironically Lady and Croaker. Mostly because the idea of the big evil bad girl ending up with some schmuck is a very interesting concept to me and not one you see often. Still, he's basically just a regular guy who did the hard work of meeting the standards of an elite, professional military. He understands the important place of the military in civilized society, an understanding widely shared by and in fact foundational to that society.

Forever War is about a conscript who hates fighting in a war no one cares about. His service alienates him from a rapidly changing culture that doesn't care about him.

In 1991 he started college in order to pursue a career in chemical engineering, then he considered clinical psychology. In 1993 he quit pretending he knew what he wanted to do with his life, changed his major to "undecided," and proceeded to study whatever amused him. He also began writing a book....

For the next seven years Pat studied anthropology, philosophy, eastern religions, history, alchemy, parapsychology, literature, and writing. He studied six different martial arts, practiced improv comedy, learned how to pick locks, and became a skilled lover of women."

>The only good book GGK wrote was Tigana, everything else is shit.

I will never understand the love for Tigana. Our band of unlikely compatriots are welded into a team during a fucking time skip. And we learn of this in a dialogue in which amongst other things, the grouchy old wizard who had earlier been marked for selfish, untrustworthy and possibly a psychopath, informs us that he loves his new teammates more than his own children and would be ready to die for any of them. This is shit writing 101. You don't get to have characters make a 180 in their beliefs and attitudes without showing us how.

Further there were a number of fairly useless scenes that no doubt in Kay's mind showed off his themes rather than his BDSM fetish, but frankly were just filler that could have been better used to, oh I don't know, show how the characters come together as a team or something.

I mean, I liked the book overall, but what I don't get is how many people seem to latch on Tigana when Kay has so many other novels that are pretty similar, but better written.
