>cyberpunk is pretty gay

there was one scene in "The Artificial Kid" where an openly bi character expressed his love for the protagonist, Rominuald Tanglin. he was killed off shortly after, though, so nobody had to deal with the consequences of his declaration.

i can't recall a lot of gay characters above the level of wallpaper in any of Gibson's books. or John Shirley's. or Neal Stephenson's. i hear Pat Cadigan was a founding cyberpunk, but i haven't read much of her work.

Can we talk about this book for an instant? I get that Angie, also in Count Zero, is practically Lain in how she can affect cyberspace without jacking in, and a simstim idol. The whole point of Mona was for the crooks to fake Angie's death with someone who looks like her so they can abduct Angie and dissect and study her father's advanced technology. But I don't remember Kumiko having any higher significance other than being a Yakuza's daughter, and later on hacking her twink hologram AI boyfriend.

Moreover, do you guess what the Count was trying to achieve with sequestering himself in a mainframe? The entitie made in NM broke into several beings, making deals with mortals voodou fashion, but I simply do not get how Bobby would be at all instrumental in connecting the AI(s) to another of its kind.

have read Daemon and Freedom from Suarez this weekend. pretty good. i like the idea that the current consumerism based culture could be superseeded not from the bottom up like a revolution or top down like a reform but through a change of paradigm. he don't explain in detail the economy of that new world but it seems it's centered on a certain transparency of information, reputation, self-sufficency and a certain insularism. i think there is a certain distribution of ressources according to your level of skills and your needs. corporations externalizing their costs on society or nature to maximize profits get corrected back so there is no deal in importing shit from third world countries. i will have to listen to it again, was in a daze at some point but there is good shit in there even if there is a few sort of corny action scenes.

Kumiko's plot was severely underdeveloped and went nowhere. I think her perspective served only to provide low-level contrast to the high-level machinations of the AIs, she was also an accessory to introduce known characters and make them stand out.

I don't think Bobby was instrumental, or rather everyone and everything is an instrument of the AIs but while Bobby's role was more involved he ultimately was dispenseable.
Seemed to me, he simply wanted to enter the aleph - ascend to another state.
My memory is fuzzy in the details though and the Neuromancer sequels, while enjoyable, aren't as good as the original.
