How do I maximize information retention when reading fiction? Taking notes doesn't seems suitable. Is there a 'proper' way to read?

A good thing to try is to take little notes or write tiny essays as you read about what you think about the content rather than the specifics of the content itself. This process will help you to integrate and embody what you are learning rather than just remember it which is longer lasting and more valuable.

I will also try something similar with a voice recorder and think aloud as I write in little clips which I will listen to later as I walk to school and so on

When you finish a sesh try to reflect on what you just read, like above anon said but it can even be just mental. Then when you start a sesh try to recall back to what happened last time without checking in the book. And when reading, mentally interrogate the text, "what is happening," "what might this signify," if the author describes something visually try to actually picture it, and so on

What is even the point of notes? Never understood this idiosyncrasy. Like you seriously need to write the same thing down again just to remember it?

What about for fixating things such as vocabulary, metaphors, modes of expression, ideas and concepts?

Yes. Physically writing notes improves memory. Have you never studied for a test?

-Do not try to remember unnecessary info, be selective
-Focus

The correct way to read is just to read unless it's for a written piece, in which example make notes of important events & interesting quotes.

I just remember the information and then do the test.

The faintest ink is more powerful than the strongest memory.

Just write notes dude, it's fine
