It's too bad because if GRRM had finished ASOIAF in an even decent manner he would probably have secured a place in the fantasy canon, certainly from a historiographic perspective. That's something few writers can hope to achieve.

I wonder how much his childlessness and atheism contribute to his lack motivation. Why care about your literary reputation when you're dead and thr only people collecting royalties are some lawyers and maybe a charity that you don't really care about?

YA has become a catch-all term for anything deemed not good enough to be marketed in their parent genre. Science fiction that is not too sciency, badly written fantasy, whatever other "urban" crap with half vampires in leather get's floated and so on.
It used to be that the genre was about plucky young adults (or infantile adults by the way they were written) but those books are a minority now.
Generally it's the perfect fare for the horribly over-worked, medicated and increasingly infantile public that simply does not have time for anything deeper.
Sad!

There are two ways of defining YA. One is that the authorial and publisher's intent is known, and that the target audience is young adults primarily.

The other is the more nebulous wherein you might get confused. I know a YA book , whether its the young characters, a focus on unnecessary and awkward romance, using proper nouns with a prefix of "The" (in YA an enemy might be The Foe, an illness The Scourge, The Uglies, The Process), and oddly enough a dystopian future setting unfortunately for me.

>>12076540
Broadly it's anything targeted at teens, from Heinlein's juveniles to Sherman Alexie writing about Native American troubles, but for our SF/F related purposes it's essentially modern pulp writing but toned down to PG-13. Drama and action in every book but not much of a plot or literary value. The literary equivalent of a comic book movie.

They're nihilistic without being edgy (as in needlessly edgy violence and rape). Elric himself is pretty emo; Moorcock wrote him as the anti-Conan and boy he sure is. I've only read about two and a half Elric stories though before I lost interest, but that seems to be a running theme with me and Moorcock: get interested in his work, start reading it, then gradually lose interest. Also if there are adults on the protag's side, they're generally either absent or useless.

Accelerando is overall good with some flashes of real skill (Max starting out the story as this bleeding-edge fringe character and ending as a basically an old man telling the kids to get off his lawn without actually changing at all).

Stross's thoughts on the relationship between Matrioshka brains, finance capitalism, and the incentives against interstellar expansion were also interesting and as far as I can tell original, although not fleshed out enough.

Shitlib politics (Islamophilia, girl power, pathetic kinks) are present but don't overwhelm the story.

The problem here is that he went into far more into depth (and was more on point) about all of those topics in his blog (which is completely coincidentally named Antipope), without the need to suffer through his politics.
