Is there any merit in being a thinker? I have ideas, and no means of putting them into practice. I thought I was a writer, but im a shitty writer. When I think about what i enjoy its thinking about ideas and concepts. Im not a very good speaker, but when I speak people tend to listen. I have charisma but no skills.

What good is being a thinker if ALL you can do is think? Who were some great thinkers that were notable for their ability to think? Were they also writers?

There's no merit to being a "good thinker" if you can't do anything else. Oftentimes lazy, incompetent people who have achieved nothing call themselves "thinkers" as a kind of crutch to make them feel better about their low position.

I dont have a list that i can reference. My thoughts are more on the spot. I have ideas about how to improve the schooling system. Ideas about how to improve my local infrastructure. things like solving small problems in peoples lives. I think about everything and anything.

Give me a topic of something to think about. Something stupid.

>>12042102
Thats sort of where I am. I have zero life skills and no formal training of any kind. My thoughts are practical and If i could take my own advice id use them for myself.

One of the criteria for being a Western thinker is being harshly critical of all thoughts, including your own. No matter how much you're married to an idea, you must immediately acid test it eleven different ways to see whether it "proves out."

Begin by having great thoughts. Continue by tendering great criticism. Pick an environment or field of study, then alternate between thought and criticism until you either produce something you find satisfactory or die.

If you can't even write your ideas down, you're probably not a good thinker

In the startup/tech industry, for example, good ideas are extremely common, to the point where people who act secretive about their ideas out of fear that someone will steal them are ridiculed, since the difficulty of implementation is the real barrier to an idea becoming reality.

If you can't even talk or write then you're dead useless. I don't want to be harsh, but to be frank you've probably deluded yourself into thinking that you're a great thinker because you haven't actually tried to contest your ideas with genuinely intelligent people who have knowledge and experience about the topics you have thoughts about.

You have two options if you genuinely are a great thinker. One is to write great things and lecture on great things, and the other is to go out in the world and achieve some form of success. Anything else just means that you're a useless, self-indulgent oxygen thief.

I can and do. im just a shitty writer. My thoughts are so scattered when I put them on paper though, its like riding a rollercoaster.

>>12042125
Im critical of myself in every way. Always critiquing myself, even to the extent of telling myself I cant write despite that being the only thing I take pride in.

>>12042137
When in the right environment Im well articulated in my speech, but I cant always convey myself. I dont know how to become a lecturer. If I could Id need to find an audience to appeal to. My audience is the common man. Ive been told that I have good ideas, but thats as far as it goes.

In that case your only hope is to refine yourself as a writer until the quality of your writing reflects the quality of your thoughts. That's only possible through lengthy practice and a lot of hard work, something which you may or may not be capable of. Just don't forget that no matter how wonderful your potential, if you don't actually produce anything then the net effect is the same as if you were born a drooling idiot.

He's right. There's no difference between writing and thinking. Writing is a form of thinking. If you can't organize your thoughts into coherent writing your thoughts probably aren't coherent either. I think it was Cicero who said that the way to build an argument or idea was to start with the main points and build from there. So maybe if you want to be a better writer, start with basic points that you want to establish and build off that foundation. Easier than trying to pound out an entire idea in one go.

Ideas are a dime a dozen. Just because you have a wild imagination doesn't necessarily mean your thought process or solutions have any bearing on reality.

Having ideas and being a shitty writer is prrferable to the inverse position.

Children learn to write well within a few years read a short story and a poem a night every night and write a story a week with your ideas and your delivery will catch up in no time.

It's not about ideas, it's about having good critical thinking and be able to see qualities and faults.

A thought is a construction. Writing or speaking help sorting it out.
If I write some thought, it's gonna be convoluted despite the point I want to make. Basically less is more. Deconstructing allow to branch off to something else and to remove what's unnecessary.
