I have read some of the earlier Penguin selection and they were good. The mini-bios of the writers from Hensher were well written. It maybe was too long, with some cuttable selections there just to make sure Great Writer X was represented regardless of whether they were a short story master.

Whichever one is compiled by people living outside of the country in question, it's very rare for a resident of a country to be able objectively evaluate it's merits or shortcomings

Shrewd statement

Depends on the age of the stories in the collection. If they're mostly pre-WW2 then the British one will be better; if it's mostly post-WW2 the American one will be.

They're both post-WW2. There is a pre WW2 British one, but I don't know if Ford has done that

>> No.12037281

>Ford once spat on Colson Whitehead after a negative review of "A Multitude of Sins", resulting in speculation that the incident may have been racially motivated rather than a matter of critical differences.[31]

Canada has plenty of talented people considering the population, but our cultural imperialist southern neighbour steals them as their own.
I don't think a Canadian short story collection would be a joke, but I also can't point to many authors that would be in it other than Alice Munro, Farley Mowat, & Leacock. We didn't read a lot of Canadian content in high school.
