Human memory is multilayered, partial, ephemeral, and fallible. Memory stored
outside the person, as a photograph or in a computer, is quite different. Human
memories change when retrieved, and new memories alter our perception of previous
memories. Over time we forget, which can be a good thing. While human memory
is a process, machine memory is a place. Its permanence can be an illusion (memory
corruption). Its permanence can also become a problem, in that it does not fully
allow for forgiveness and change. As we rely on computers more and more to be
our external memories, we alter how we remember, what we remember, and our
relationship to the past. Due to the differences in human and machine memory,
outsourced memory should be seen as an aid rather than a replacement, and we
should be wary of what we commit to digital storage.

This fiction, which we would describe as irreal, resembles the work of writers such as Franz Kafka, Kobo Abe, Clarice Lispector and Jorge Luis Borges. As a type of fiction it rejects the tendency to portray people and places realistically and the need for a full resolution to the story; instead, it shows us a reality constantly being undermined. Therefore, we're interested in stories by writers who write about what they don't know, take us places we couldn't possibly go, and don't try to make us care about the characters.

memory is a useful fiction, is the author just reiterating this in a really wordy way?

Pragmatics is the study of how context affects meaning. The two primary forms of context important to pragmatics are linguistic context and situation context.

Linguistic context is how meaning is understood without relying on intent and assumptions. In applied pragmatics, for example, meaning is formed through sensory experiences, even though sensory stimulus cannot be easily articulated in language or signs. Pragmatics, then, reveals that meaning is both something affected by and affecting the world. Meaning is something contextual with respect to language and the world, and is also something active toward other meanings and the world. Linguistic context becomes important when looking at particular linguistic problems such as that of pronouns.

Situation context refers to every non-linguistic factor that affects the meaning of a phrase. An example of situation context can be seen in the phrase "it's cold in here", which can either be a simple statement of fact or a request to turn up the heat, depending on, among other things, whether or not it is believed to be in the listener's power to affect the temperature.
