I found at community college no one actually reads the required reading for other subjects... or even makes an attempt. They think they can survive on the hand outs.

I'm 22 and got called a teachers pet by a guy straight out of high school because I bought a Dictionary of Sociology.

I am not a lit major, however, so the classes in which I have to read books for usually consist of a bunch of lazy fucks who never read anything and always make me feel bad for the professor.

A shitty community college. Nobody reads, not even the required readings, and I suspect many of the students are illiterate.

The actual campus is pretty safe, and the area around it isn't even GHETTO ghetto. Most people around here are employed by the university, so overt attacks on the students = bad.

Lots of outdoorsy-ness, so *some* decent lit gets read, but not discussed heavily

This is a college thing, not necessarily a literature major thing. Every time I went to a meeting of anything I came away disgusted. Tough it out and you're likely to learn something interesting or at least meet a few people worth knowing.
