I'm sure I have but being a relatively young guy the topic of books never really comes up often in conversation with people in my age group. The only person I regularly bring up books to is my gf but she doesn't really discuss things with me, she just listens to what I have to say.

>>12019806
I disagree, non-fiction is often far more interesting than fiction.

I believe it! I jumped into Nietzche and understood a good chunk of it but its clear that I need to go read plato and homer and stuff just to grasp it all. I also just bought Infinite Jest after browsing here for a while and it made me realize I shouldn't just jump into complex books without improving my comprehension and all that so im starting small

Nothing comes close but I'm talking about averages not the best literature of all time. I'd rather read a standard textbook on any subject I find interesting than a middling work of fiction.

My best friend is illiterate, he has never finished a book before not even retarded shit that he is interested in. Funny though, he’s still much more intuitive and capable of incisive critique than most of my classmates and the anons i encounter here who have masters and phd’s from elite universities.

I can't tell if I'm illiterate or not I don't read the highbrow art books lit likes a lot of them just say stuff I thought as a teenager and young adult or are boring and obtuse for the sake of it with prose that reads like an English major who's "experimenting" I just read my funny books from humorists . >Not start with Romans
The Romans started with the Greeks. The Roman national epic is a sequel to the Iliad. The Roman historiographic tradition (Livy, Tacitus, Strabo) and rudimentary scientific knowledge (Pliny the Elder, Vitruvius) mostly builds upon Greek knowledge of the world. Roman sailors and soldiers used maps and geographical reference books made by the Greeks (Ptolemy's Geography, for example). What little there was of Roman philosophy (Cicero, Seneca, Apuleius) was almost entirely copied off the Platonists and the Stoics.
The Romans built their empire on Greek discipline and using Greek technology. What little they had of native traditions and culture were mostly their language, their military uniforms, their form of government, and some of their religious rituals.

Yes, an old housemate of mine. Had never read a book outside of ones he had to read at school.
Though he had his reasons, he had some kind of autism and he couldn't relate at all to characters in books and movies etc, he was kind of odd to talk to in real life as well but he tried hard. He'd also had cancer twice by age 21 so he had other things on his plate.
Because of this thread I looked him up and he's actually doing better than me, he's an artist doing exhibitions all over the country. Out of all the people I've ever known he's the one that deserves his success the most.

He returned it 6 months later unread.
I doubt to high heaven he has read anything but picture books and maybe a Simpsons comic or two in his whole life.
