Just go to your local bookstore and pick up one of those hefty travel books containing pictures of our points of interest. That's probably all you're wanting to see anyway. I doubt you want to come deep into the state of Ohio to see what makes America really move.

Americans don't really understand art or culture in the classical sense, they just have a massive hard on for nature and wide landscapes. Having said that, The Art Spirit by Robert Henri is an interesting book.

The US spans a fifth of a continent.
I only mention this because it really does not seem to dawn on many tourists just how much land there really is.

Can you narrow down what you are asking for?

I don't read a lot of books about history in particular so I'll list some fiction.
Read Blood Meridian and Desert Solitaire (non-fiction) to get some atmospheric writing on the deserts in America. Inherent Vice describes parts of California well, what the influence of the 60s were like (an important decade for sure) and American culture in general imo. Even though it's by Pynchon it's pretty easy to read. If you want to read about the region known as The South (more accurately the South-East) I'd recommend Their Eyes Were Watching God, it's written by an anthropologist so there's a lot of culture crammed into it. In the Heart of the Heart of the Country from what I remember describes our Mid-West really well. I think the story collection Jesus' Son captures the sadness of America beautifully and is really short and Death of a Salesman is a play that also captures our sadnesses immensely as well. I don't know what to recommend for NYC. Someone else can help you with that. I hope this helps you understand my country.

This is actually a good one, and something of what this book detected in the 80's still hangs in the American air.
It's not a mean book at all.
