A preliminary observation without which we cannot attain any clarity regarding the phenomenon of smug anime girls is their plurality. Costanza is one, Frodo is one, but the anime girls are legion. Their innumerable multitudes require folders to regiment and contain them, organized along criteria appropriate to every conceivable shitposting occasion, marshaled like an army at the service of thread derailment and (you) acquisition. A second observation, equally pertinent, is the feminine element involved. Frodo and Costanza, though differing in a number of respects, share in the brotherly bond of manhood. This masculine element always invites one to a direct engagement of some sort, in the case of Costanza a hostile engagement, and with men a hostile engagement is always an occasion for sport, play, and friendly competition, while in the case of Frodo one feels invited to share in the memory of past triumphs, moments of joy, shared between friends. In contradistinction, the anime girls, in typical feminine fashion, forbid all access to their purdah of haughty irony, their schadenfreude at your expense is as sacrosanct to them as their body, you may not enter into it without their permission, and, rest assured, you will not receive it. The aforementioned element of their multitude contributes to a certain social factor in the psychological import of the meme. The anime girls constitute an in-group, and you, my unfortunate friend, find yourself in the out-group. Contrast this with Costanza's individualist stand, a lonely, albeit self satisfied, egoist spurning any outward support, he needs none, he wants none.
