(Zelazny and GRRM were friends and neighbors. I see a lot of Zelazny's influence on GoT.) Corwin the hero is less of a schemer because of spoilers and he has a conscience but still wants to take power.

Also, was Wahram just toad-ugly or did he have spliced toad characteristics. Also, am I crazy but was Inspector Genette not referred to by a definitive gender pronoun until the end of the book? I know it's supposed to be ambiguous, but I was wondering if anyone else pictured her as a tiny woman. This leads to my last question; was I supposed to picture the "smalls" as achondroplastic or just smaller versions of large people?

Ultimately unsatisfying, almost a chore. I like to have more to chew on at this point.

Goodreads, finding and following people with good taste is the difficult part. You can start with authors that you like and go from there.

Reddit is good for requests like, I want an x type of protagonist in a y setting with x trope. Lot more people frequent it so there's a better chance of getting the type of recs you're looking for.

Tor, to catch new releases by month and the occasional rec.

/sffg/, you can find the occasional good book here, especially older books but it's hard to get people to talk about what's good or bad about a book and this place is not exactly overrun with users.

Awards like you said are a good source too, Hugos and Nebulas might have gone to shit recently but you can check past winners and nominations. Dragon awards, Philip K. Dick award, Gemmell award and SPFBO(if you're into self pub books) are some others you can check. Awards are my go to to find good novellas and short stories.

That's ok, Vurt took me a moment to get used to how strange the descriptions were,in the first page it already talks about robocrusties holding up a sign asking for something, inpho beams being fired from a shadowcops eyes to scan everything around him, the dog from the robocrusty trying to bite the shadowcop and snapping it's jaws shut on thin air and getting blasted with fire as a result.
It just became really hard to wrap my brain around it in the first couple of pages.
After a while it got a bit clearer, although the lines between what is real in the story and what is vurt just start to melt together at some point.
The descriptions of incest were great, also when the gang decided to watch some pornovurts together and mandy's voice being heavy and full of want just sounded lovely.
The one thing I didn't like though was that The thing and Bridget weren't much in the novel even though they were written so interesting, but the ending was really good though regardless.

Not only were the Fremen the best warriors by Dune’s logic but I doubt they had to actually do much fighting in their jihad. It’s established that because Paul and the fremen have control of the spice they basically already have the entirety of civilization by the balls due to their reliance on the drug. I bet the highest actual point of combat was that last battle on Dune with the Shaddam’s joint forces

No that is not true. The Fremen were deployed far and wide, across the whole of known space. Paul's little jihad was just a dress rehearsal for the Kralizec.
The badass dumbass anon here >>11986912 is kind of right. The Sardaukar were equal to ten times their number of Landsraad forces (effectively putting all of the great houses against House Corinno ). The Fremen were even better. I think there is a passage where the good baron goes through off world shipping manifests and does not believe the Sardaukar body count that Fremen racked up. That was of course after Paul reformed them.
People also forget the reasons why Padishah Emperor involved himself with the House Atreides. One, on account of Duke Leto's popularity among the Great Houses. Second (and far more important) was that Leto with Gurney Halleck and Thufir Hawat were able to create a fighting force superior to Sarduakar in every way.
Given enough time I think that Paul would have formed the 4chan userbase into an effective fighting force, let alone a bunch of blood thirsty space Jews.

That's one of the things I liked about Vurt, how Noon throws you into the story without an infodump. He draws on cyberpunk style that way, trusting that the reader can figure things out for themselves.
I agree that I wanted to know more about Bridget and the Thing but it makes sense to keep them mysterious because that's their natures.
Noon had a bunch of really great moments in Vurt. His style changed after Nymphomation and I haven't found the same satisfaction from any of his recent books unfortunately.

I wish the thing got used more in the story but I guess it was supposed to be the mcguffin that the protagonist is looking for as well as the yellow feather. But even a chapter more where they interact with it would have been great, such as when he tastes a little bit of thing flesh and goes on a violent mutant vurt trip. those parts I personally found the best, and they pretty much carried the story for me at least.

I mean the jihad doesn’t necessarily have to be a violent war. I haven’t read anything but the first Dune, so maybe that discounts my interpretation and Herbert calls me a fag in the third book. But I interpret the bloody jihad Paul sees as the violence that comes from having a new ruling class (Fremen) who see themselves not only as the spiritual superior but the physical one of the rest of the human race. They would be an oppressive and violent ruling class, not to mention the eternal chip on their shoulder as a people with a history of oppression
