In the context of the story the actor can make that face to convey all-encompassing kindness and tranquillity cause his character is basically an archetype for the gentle, brave and loving hero who's walked his fated path and can now rest. Out of that context that expression looks too ott for it's intended purpose and is inevitably to be reinterpreted, and most people reinterpreted it as smugness.
