We do much discussion here on /lit/ regarding the tiers of profession, as to which rank the 'most /lit/'.
Doubtless, nothing can top the monastic life. By renouncing everything, you gain everything. Nothing depends on validation or approval, the pursuit of riches, or power, or things of the flesh. There is no admiration or respect from most outsiders and most monastics sever all ties from the world they previously knew. By overcoming these, they gain more than even the most accomplished people. A perfect contentment. It is often seen by outsiders, even by religious people as a "waste" of life, but in reality, it is the way to extract the most contentment and ride the highest plateaus of joy out of it.

'Let your soul therefore turn always:
"Not to what is most easy, but to what is hardest;
"Not to what tastes best, but to what is most distasteful;
"Not to what most pleases, but to what disgusts;
"Not to matter of consolation, but to matter for desolation rather;
"Not to rest, but to labor;
"Not to desire the more, but the less;
"Not to aspire to what is highest and most precious, but to what is lowest and most contemptible;
"Not to will anything, but to will nothing;
"Not to seek the best in everything, but to seek the worst, so that you may enter for the love of Christ into a complete destitution, a perfect poverty of spirit, and an absolute renunciation of everything in this world.

they're all god's creatures.
The corvids have a sense of agency that other birds don't have. they have the Promethean weight on their shoulders that humans have but they don't have the the eternal sin. They're god's little tricksters.

Dove's may be more holy but the crow family captures my imagination and make me chuckle.

I don't equate them with evil and darkness as they are depicted in contemporary symbolism.

There's never a bad reason to post a pic of a crow.

Merton, The Seven-Story Mountain.

Comfy, and addresses most of your how-to-become-a-monk questions.

Marmion, Christ, the Ideal of the Monk = a fine exposition of the ideals of monastic spirituality.

Both Merton and Marmion struggled quite a bit with their first few years living the rigors of monastic life. (Michael Mott's bio "The seven Mountains of Thomas Merton" seems to offer a fair and balanced take on the wayward aspects of the last few years of Merton's spiritual journey.)

Chronicle of the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds by Jocelin of Brakelond

Settle in for MAXIMUM COMFY account of a 13th century English order, including the monk's small disagreements, especially in electing a new Abbot, the new Abbots' administration, seeking to pay off the debts to the jews that the previous Abbot incurred, and of course, descriptions of feasts.

He does this in the common room where lay people sit around and have tea - periodically asking if he’s being too loud disrupting their inane conversation while he’s becoming a conduit for some physical order.
