Dystopian stuff in modern times I would recommend The Road or Roadside picnic. If you like cyberpunk which is like a kind of dystopian future sci-fi I'd suggest Neuromancer.
Im not too knowledgeable about sword and sorcery stuff but try the Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings maybe which is the only really big name that comes to mind.
The only big serious space novels that comes to mind is 2001 a Space Odyssey and if you like comedy with your space the hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is great. There was another serious novel that was about the sun exploding or something but I can't remember the name right now.
I'm sure more experienced lit anons will have more (and possibly much better) examples to choose from, but I can only recommend what I know.
Enjoy yourself anon

Writing is fun though, even short stories or snippets from the life of someone in a sci-fi or fantasy setting is a good way to practice your writing.
The best advice I'd ever been given about writing is that you can't edit a blank page. Don't worry about prose or if the logic of the story isn't 100%, even if you have to skip a chapter or two in your story because you're stuck at the point where you are is fine, you can fix all that when you do the first or second rework of the story and pick up the loose ends.
But you can't edit a blank page, nobody can edit a blank page no matter how good they are of an editor and most importantly nobody can or will read a blank page.

Amidst the shitposting, I'll do an Amazon book review since nobody fucking else reads this shit:

I recently read Broken Stars (https://www.amazon.com/Broken-Stars-Universe-Fire-Book-ebook/dp/B07CZX4CQG/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1540164727&sr=1-1&keywords=broken+stars&dpID=51dqiQvUd8L&preST=_SY445_QL70_&dpSrc=srch)) which is borderline RPGshit. The premise intrigued me--humans finally launch a spaceship only to be shot down by a higher civilization and confined on Earth, furthering their technology and discovering magic. Obviously, it goes deeper than that. but you get the gist. Many of the battle scenes and descriptions are needlessly lengthy (e.g., spelling out a number instead of using numerical units, too much pedancy any time a battle takes place or a battle-related object is described, etc.) Ultimately, the few twists within the first book weren't as cliche and expected as thought and while it isn't anything amazing, it would be alright for an afternoon read.

In non-Amazonshit, I strongly suggest reading Non-Stop by Brian Aldiss.

>I enjoy writing, but I haven't done any creative writing since high school, and no academic writing since university. When it's my own topic, on my own volition, I psych myself out and waste time.

>University
You are already miles ahead of me in terms of being able to write a text that looks like it was written by a professional.
I'm an absolute beginner, and even though I have a decent grasp of the English language (as a non native) I'm most likely lagging behind some of the more educated anons here.
But I still have hope, my writing might be garbage today and maybe it won't get any better any time soon. But someday it will go from garbage to terrible and from terrible to just plain bad. Then it will go from bad to meh and from meh to ok. Maybe it will take some years after this but at some point if I put enough effort in I will go from ok to pretty good and eventually I'll go from pretty good to excellent.
I'm not too sure what comes after excellent but if I'm ever mentioned somewhere where a novel or anything I've made is seen as excellent I'd probably be pretty proud of achieving that.
The main point is to never lose hope, hope is the only thing that keeps doubt out of your mind and doubt is the most dangerous thing a man can face. Doubt can kill thoughts before you even consider them, because you doubt that you're good enough and especially so when that doubt is unwarranted since your ideas might actually be really good, but before you can consider them and make them a reality the doubt kills them and they're lost forever.

My readings of Clarke tend to create a sort of intellectual haunted house where I am allowed to perambulate through a masterful artifice that has ideas and settings pounce out at me and force me to take them in and react, but never really touching me or giving me a latching point to give any emotional reaction.

Which is weird since Childhood's End was sold to me as a tragedy.

Need some help finding a Sci-Fi book I can't remember the name and would like to read again.

It starts off with a committee/government wanting to make a memorial project, or some kind of art project to send out into space. There is then a team or group that ends up on planet/asteroid thing. They explore it and start to improve it. A grey cube is found, it's some kind of computer/block of nano machines. They find out they are in a giant compartment of a much larger ship. The larger ship has many other compartments with different alien races. They find a way to "escape" the giant ship with some of the people, the rest stay there.

That is most of what I remember, any help finding the name of the story and/or author would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm working on a sci-fi and fantasy series and I hate the book x out of x thing as well, it keeps me from reading the series due to the sheer volume (the wheel of Time comes to mind).
However what do you think about a story that does have an overarching plotline between multiple books. This plotline is not the main plot of the seperate books (they each have their own storylines) but more like a B plot and gets resolved in the last book (which would make it the main plot in that one). The B plot would be like a glue that connects the stories together but wouldn't force you to read in a certain order and you be able to piece it together no matter the order you read it in.

The reason I recommend those two is because they're better but these have some good info.

> Leil Lowndes - I skimmed a couple of her books at the bookstore and she seems to have good or at least decent ideas about communication.
> How to Flirt by Westerman - Not a PUA book. The way he defines it, the goal is to have fun banter with anyone, not just romantic potential partners. It's out of print but available used.
> Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and the Five Love Languages books - These are definitely lesser quality because they're overgeneralizations and people can obviously react positively to more than one form of affection. Five Love Languages can be preachy. These books should be 4 pages long but their ideas are decent templates.
> How to Win Friends and Influence People - This book is really old and kind of bad and should be 2 pages long. Yes it's good to ask people about their interests but don't keep using their name in conversation--that's unnecessary and weird.
> Emotional Intelligence 2.0 - Skimmed it and it looks decent. The focus is on becoming aware of and modifying your reactions to social situations
> Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion - Scientific, focuses on business, should be 4 pages long. Old but has fundamentals.

I haven't read or skimmed The Charisma Myth yet. It sounds good but also probably should be a pamphlet instead of a book.

I've always been under the impression it's been popular, at least popular enough to have seen non-readers call the fans "zombies."

More seriously I think it's that the series "looks hard" to get into. There are a lot of books, and they weren't written/published in chronological order. Also the romance aspect of the intro books was likely a turn-off, "that's not space opera that's girl stuff" or whatever, despite most of the pre-Komarr stuff with Miles being about his "harem of terrifying amazons" (to quote his brother) rather than some generic cardboard cutouts mooning over each other.

When I was reading Shards of Honor I actually realized I'd tried reading it before but had dropped it during the intro section. The book really is kinda fanficcy at fist but it gets a lot better around the halfway point where Cordelia gets back to Beta colony and Jason Bourne's a psychiatrist.

That's mostly why I haven't read any yet. I am not into whole universes kinda stuff, I like a story about a character or a few and then on to the next story. And since I don't know if there is like a trilogy following a character in that series, or if each books is about a different person, I get really reticent about it. Same reason why I haven't started the culture yet. Personally, I don't mind the romance too much, except when written by women, they tend to lose focus on the other aspects of the story and focus on how the main character, usually the woman, is feeling about each of her three fuck buddies, and how hot their abs are.

What is it that you guys love about science fiction or fantasy, what is that one thing, that one trope that keeps pulling you back into it.

I always prefer science fiction over fantasy when given the choice or at the minimum modern era science fiction (It's just that I can imagine a future supercity much easier than a dark and foreboding woods).

My tipping point is usually when the story goes so far ahead into the future that people aren't people anymore (multiple millennia in the future for example where they move beyond a cyberarm something like that and just take really strange and alien forms) and it just makes it feel weird reading about them as a person since they're so removed from what I can see in front of me, the only example I can think of at the moment are how the spacing guild navigators were portrayed in the dune movie.

Fantasy (or at the least middle age looking fantasy with magical elements) always seems to be inspired by Tolkien in some way to me at least (and not just books but games and movies as well) there are a few good exceptions but a lot of them feel this way.

That's not to say I don't like Tolkien esque stuff, Elves, gnomes, the fair folk and orcs and such are great (dwarfs are kind of meh though since they're usually just short scotsmen a lot of the time). I just wish there was more variety in the fantasy stuff (shadowrun comes to mind and fallout seems to hit it just perfectly for me although other than the games there isn't much to read but tabletop splat books.).

If a fantasy buff knows a book that will blow me away then please reply the name, I'm starving for something that will completely pull me in and make me see the fantastical worlds that it portrays.

Great stories aren't reducible to one thing.

For example, if you haven't read the Amber books by Zelazny:
>not bloated (books 1-5, don't read series 2)
>lots of action and intrigue keeps the plot moving
>great prose
>interesting characters
>not cliche -- no elves, dwarves, etc
>unique magic system based on Tarot
All this comes together to make a great series

If you want a single fantasy book try Vurt by Jeff Noon:
>unique magic system - programmable feathers that tap into Jungian archetypes
>great prose
>interesting characters
>urban fantasy without elves, dwarves, vampires, fae, etc.

That might be the part where I have the least idea what's really going on. I mostly chalked it up to Wolfe telling the reader SEVERIAN HAS A SISTER in huge letters. Typhon's ring is a trap obviously, a tempting metal object that delivers a lethal electric shock. Again, all I really take away from that is that it foreshadows Typhon being a dick. I actually don't think that "little Severian" is another version of Severian, for one thing Severian surely would have remarked on a resemblance and he didn't.

With the Vorkosigan series it's more that it jumps around in the timeline. So like, in original publication order you have Shards of Honor, then several books about Miles going on adventures with his mercenary fleet, and then it jumps back to Barrayar and his parents again. There are only a few books where viewpoint switches to a supporting character like Ethan of Athos or Captain Vorpatril's Alliance.

The romance is more "grown up" in the sense that it's just part of the story, and in a good part of the series it doesn't even show up. And it's more "real people" rather than some overwrought purple prose "oh Cordelia!" "oh Aral!" *swoons* stuff. Adults making adult decisions about their lives.

I got a question about magic.

Suppose there is a writer called John. John wants to write a "low magic" fantasy. He designs a world that is more or less compatible with modern science and adds some rules for the magic. The rules he adds are based on other popular stories, and are mostly plot devices to keep the story interesting.

Now I want to ask: does it make sense to apply Levi-Strauss' theory of magic on John? I mean, John isn't a sorcerer and he writes his story for popularity. Does it still work?

I think my answer is no. Because a scientific theory is made by observing, describing, and trying to manipulate the real world.
A made up rules on the other hand is to make up a fake world according to a pre-established model. This. Is. Not. Science.

There is one aspect not yet specified in the scenario though: the readers. It could be that John isn't really making up a fake world from scratch. John is very likely trying to find the "winning formula" of the fantasy genre. In that case, this is still not science. But what John is doing is trying to extract rules from other people's description

On the other hand, the whole fantasy community is very self reflexive. It could be that they are making up rules in an interactive process.

Time to go back to read more Levi Strauss

I have to add that SW fans are partially to blame for the horrible quality of the novels. I understand that the movies (old and new) weren't really giving the authors all that much to work with but if the fandom was in general better read and unwilling to buy any SW branded crap no matter how bad it was, the novels could have been better.
It probably doesn't even matter know, with how Disney ran the franchise in the ground.

Thank you so much for your reply, it's just that I don't have much experience with fantasy books other than the LOTR and the Hobbit and when I try looking around it's a lot of the same and it just makes it feel a little dulled, at least when I compare it to science fiction stuff that I found so far to be incredibly diverse in terms of subgenres and just consistently seems to hit the right notes with me.

Also I don't mind the fantastical races, elves in particular fit a certain thing I love in these kinds of stories, they live for such a long time that they almost seem have a motherly role to the lesser races.

I'll give the recommendations a read when I get the chance, studies are coming to an end so I'll lots of free time to increase my reading to consecutive days to possibly weeks.

I wish you retards weren't so averse to reading short stories and novellas because I'm reading some straight up kino. It's adventurous and humorous in the classic 'dry' style while having plenty of twists and turns and actual likable characters. A great antidote to the slogging grimderpness I read recently with Unholy Consult.

I only ever read a small handful of short stories before and they were from a SF omnibus I somehow aquired when I was a teen, probably from an op-shop for $2.

The only story I really remember was of a dystopian future wherin anybody who had talent, intellect, or beauty was stifled with physical restraints in order to make everyone perfectly equal. Thoroughly enjoyed it then and today I realise why.

Hi all! I've been looking for a very particular kind of story that I'm not having much luck finding, so I'd love some help.

I'm looking for a story that focuses on travels across a fantastical world, with a sense of fun, whimsy, and wonder, and a spotlight on the magic, the wondrous and impossible locales, the strange and scary creatures, the exotic peoples and cultures, and so on... Ideally it wouldn't be about saving the world, but it's okay if the protagonist(s) end up on a world-saving quest sorta on accident.

The closest things I've found would be the Edge Chronicles series, the Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox, the Earthsea books, The Belgariad, Young Wizards, and the Hobbit. They're all circling what I'm looking for to various degrees, but aren't quite it.

Any suggestions? It seems like there should be a lot of books like this but I've found remarkably little.

Mostly fantasy, though I have some vague scifi ideas and only one concrete.

>How far along are you?

Wrote some short stories, though anything longer makes me lose track. I don't really see myself writing a novel at the moment, at most a novella.

>Are you doing NaNoWriMo next month?

I dunno, 50k in a month seems crazy. I never wrote anything that long, anyway.

>>11969509

Not the quoted but thanks, your posted helped a bit.

>>11971770

Didn't think it was as bad as the other anon, but it surely aged bad. The prose is fine but the plot is boring.

>>11978093

Current? None. I'd say Gaiman, but for some reason he never gets there though being in the game for such a long time. The next King/Rowling is yet to be discovered imo.

I know what you're trying to say but King and Rowling became big with their first books and completely dominated their genres. There was never anything non-mainstream about them.

Matt Ruff would be a better example. After writing for decades, one of his books got picked up for a TV series. Lovecraft Country will be coming to HBO.
