Nick Land is a sort of anti-mystic. He has this conception of the 'Outside' which is sort of like the Noumenon, beyond our normal categories of understanding, and this Outside is infringing upon our reality in ways we do not understand. Capital for Land(Land's capital is only vaguely the same thing as Marxist capital) is a process by which the future is attacking the present, an accelerated intelligence, optimizing everything for intellgience.

This is very similar to some understandings of whta God is, a metaphysical cohering principle, except that there are no benevolent connotations to Land's Outside, it is a blind Darwinian process whose only quality is 'intelligence'

>§00. 'Acceleration' as it is used here describes the time-structure of capital accumulation. It thus references the 'roundaboutness' founding Bohm-Bawerk's model of capitalization, in which saving and technicity are integrated within a single social process-diversion of resources from immediate consumption into the enhancement of productive apparatus. Consequently, as basic co-components of capital, technology and economics have only a limited, formal distinctiveness under historical conditions of ignited capital escalation. The indissolubly twin-dynamic is techonomic (cross-excited commercial industrialism). Acceleration is techonomic time.
>§01. Acceleration is initially proposed as a cybernetic expectation. In any cumulative circuit, stimulated by its own output, and therefore self-propelled, acceleration is normal behavior. Within the diagrammable terrain of feedback directed processes, there are found only explosions and traps, in their various complexions. Accelerationism identifies the basic diagram of modernity as explosive.

It is in difference that movement is
produced as an "effect", that phenomena flash their meanings like signs. The intense
world of difference, in which we find reason behind qualities and the being of the
sensible. It's the process of becoming that is the process itself.

Why does Land believe capital to be sentientnand special? Since his philosophy is purely speculative, he could have imagined any other entity on "the Outside".

there are, like, four books on OOO. it died a few years ago. just read the actual people who did it and then its eulogy, continental realism and its discontents.

because 'capital', seen in this context as the process by which markets are running away from human control, spontaneous emergence of intelligence optimizing, is just the sort of phenomenal manifestation of whatever on the Outside is actually causing things to happen supra-spacetime.

The fixation on capital is somewhat inane. Biological evolution is clearly part of the same process of optmizing for intelligence per Land's system

Okay, but two objections:
1. Markets produce not only intelligent solutions, but also irrationality (luxury fashion or cars) and pointless speculative activities (stock and real estate bubbles). Why does Land believe them to be pure manifestations of intelligence?
2. Capitalism is a very recent phenomenon. Why has this outer intelligence done nothing for most of human history?

I believe that Land's fixation on the idea of 'capital' is just a bias from his Marxist days. What he's really talking about is rising 'order', rising complexity. Which began basically as soon as the Big Bang started to cool

Capitalism is clearly an acceleration of the process, and the 'deterritorialization' it causes something of a phase change, but it's the same shit really in the end.
