I've read all 10 and even though I don't regret reading them (there is a lot to like in them) I doubt I'll ever read them again. Thanks for the input.
I really like the premise of it so I want to check them out. It does bother me to think that the whole thing could have been done in less than 10 books but at the same time I don't mind the idea of a series focused on world building.

>> No.11918702

>>11918671
Just as a warning, this series does not hold your hand when it comes to world building. It drops you right in the middle of the action and you have to pick up stuff as you go. There's no easy exposition explaining every unfamiliar term and the history of things at the outset.

Also the scale of it is massive. I cannot stress this enough, but it takes several books for things to develop. There are so many characters, places, and events that it's not until book 5 that all the major people and settings are introduced.

I'll get my unpopular opinion out of the way as Tigana seems to be liked around these parts.

Don't read it, it's incredibly cringy, has a little too much out of place sex for the sake of it to the point it felt like fan service, the world building is bad which gimps the premise and makes it so that it never quite delivers on the epic scale you expect it to at the beginning. The idea is there but GGK fails to execute it and cops out with a bittersweet ending right after a massive let down of a climax which felt more like a brawl than a battle to usurp a tyrant.

Fantasy. There's pseudo-logic used to explain how our Earth fits into this cosmos but that's about it. I would say the Highlander stuff is fairly similar in structure. There isn't really any spellslinging. I guess this is what is usually referred to as low fantasy, where high fantasy would be elves and robes and spells and staving off diabetes.

"Lord of Light" is Zelazny writing something with literary value. If you're fresh outta /v/, it might not be your cup of tea just yet. If you're in your twenties, you'd probably enjoy it more.

I've been shilling the series for a while now and overall the series is more a "adventure series where most of the characters also happen to be in the military" setup than traditional military scifi. Fewer space battles and more stuff like "we need to infiltrate this vault on a high-gravity planet to secure a plot device that'll tell us what the fuck is going on" and stuff about alien politics. (which, IMO, is one of the strong points of the series, the stuff about the Tavalai and Paren is actually interesting)

You might also try Marko Kloos' Frontlines series as a antidote to the usual "militarist fascist shit" as you put it. Main character is a self-described "welfare rat" from the megacity slums and it plays a good part in the development of the character as he gets older and more war weary. Poor Man's War by Elliot Kay was also good at taking a more reasoned look at things, but I haven't read the sequels yet. (surprisingly good and entertaining for a author who's other work is a urban fantasy harem series)

>>11919065
Sword of the Bright Lady is kinda in the same genre: A middle-aged engineer from Arizona falls through a portal to fantasyland and becomes a warrior-priest who has vaguely Dungeons and Dragons style "prepare your skills for the day" powers, he promptly sets about starting to make rifles and explosives and industrial equipment so that random people without any levels can shoot the "ranked" off their mighty steeds. There isn't much "stats" stuff aside from him going "I'm gonna need Enchant Weapon today so I can power up these cannons" or going "the amount of magic XP gems and gold to reach the next level was a tremendous cost, but it would allow me to resurrect my men."

I've been trying to remember a few books I read for the longest time and I can't seem to remember them and its driving me crazy

Before I start its not WoT
One was a fantasy book where some young guy lives on some ranch with his pa but some shit goes down.
Not sure how he leaves or what happens exactly, but to the west theres a country that keeps women chained? or it might be men, for their magic (its not WoT again)
Theres some war hes in to the east, where some catastrophic event happens and like seige engines destroy an entire city or something.
At the end I remember he was very powerful and found out that I think his magic was tied to some other realm whose beings were coming to destroy his world, and these beings just went around doing this.
So he was badass and he stops the cycle.

Thoroughly enjoyed pic related, but thinking about the part where they start talking with Rorschach is bothering me.

I don't buy for one second that just from listening to broadcast media Rorschach would be able to be proficient in English, or any language for that matter. The Chinese Room idea is neat and all but it is predicated on the notion that someone who actually understands the language is creating the algorithm for the person in the box to use to reply to message sent into the box. Rorschach had no such instruction and so couldn't possibly conceive of when and in what context things should be sent. Sure, if you perform a statistical analysis on language then you might find that, for instance, when somebody says "hello", then 80% of the time the reply is also "hello". But that doesn't account for context at all. People can reply with fucking anything. Maybe the hate the person talking to them, maybe they're in a hurry to get tot he point etc. etc. My point is there are near infinite different responses depending on context. How did Rorschach know how to communicate so perfectly?

Moreover how did they figure out that he 'had no idea what he was saying'? Sure you can shove lexical ambiguities into your sentences like Susan did to test him, but so what? Not replying to them isn't an indicator that you don't see they're there. The vast majority of people don't even pick up on lexical ambiguities in everyday conversation, and if they do see them they aren't exactly going to stop the conversation to ask why someone used them. They'll just continue because they can very obviously infer from context what the person meant.

Absolutely loved the book but this seemed a bit weak to me.

you are assuming for some reason that an alien would not be incomprehensibly more intelligent than humanity. and making a chinese room is not so difficult, look at Tay

>> No.11921760

>>11921730
You can be as incomprehensibly intelligent as you like, but unless you have a reference from which to make your algorithm then you're going to be making blind stabs in the dark. In theory a chinese room is fine, but the person in the room has absolutely no control over where the conversation is heading even if they wanted to. Imagine that the person in the chinese room is locked in and they want to get the person outside to unlock them, they decide that they will us their message to try and make this happen. Unfortunately as they have no idea what they're saying they can't possibly steer the conversation in any direction beyond whatever the person who made the response algorithm has allowed in their list of responses to various inputs.

In the same way Rorschach was very clearly directing the conversation and trying to influence the crew to first of all stay away, then to frighten and threaten them. But how, if it has no idea what it's saying, could it possibly come up with these 'directed' responses that are by definition context based?

>> No.11921776

Time anon. They had time. They were listening in on humanity's communication for who knows how long. Years passed between the Firefly incident and Theseus actually making contact.

As for the linguist discovering that the ayyliens had no comprehension, it was also due to time spent "conversing". They spent days talking.

>> No.11921795

>>11921776
>the ayyliens had no comprehension
But they very clearly did because they responded appropriately as anyone would to what the crew were saying, and on top of that Rorschach acted in accordance with what it was saying as well. If someone sends a message into a chinese room and gets a response saying "I'll kill you motherfucker" and nothing happens then you can surmise that it is a genuine chinese room and the person sending the messages out has no clue what they're saying. If you get a message back saying "I'll kill you motherfucker" and then the door opens and the person inside stabs you with a knife then it's clear that they did know what they were saying. Either that or the person telling the person inside what to say has manipulated them into doing so, but in Blindsight there isn't any third party manipulating Rorschach.

There's a lot more than those out there. It's not even that I don't like the first Ice and Fire book. I'm just not getting into a series he seems to have no intention of finishing.

And man Shannara was really dry by the numbers stuff. I do hear it gets better, but again, I just don't have the patience to get that far right now.

I've read the first one and a half. I trailed off for frankly no good reason. Life gets distracting. I wasn't loving it. Everything was buried under ten layers of obfuscation. Lying narrator. Ignorant narrator. Insane narrator. Mistaken narrator. Severin is a mess. I was fascinated by them and I'd dearly love to finish the series. All 12 books or however many there are. All the short stories. I made a damned list. Just.... not right now.

Not serious fantasy, you'll make less than what you would with a day job unless you become one the top 2-3 authors or your book gets adapted.

If you want money, the YA genre should be your main focus, preferably writing something formulaic you can finish and release every 6 months.

Very carefully. Have the first book ready to be picked up in pristine condition, have your bookmarker ready along with a note book to take notes if needed and a pencil to do it with and make sure you sharpen it. Then start by picking up the sharp pencil and stabbing yourself in the fucking eye you tasteless shit eating monkey.

Although I wonder if they'll cast a black actress of an empire built around owning slaves or if they'll find a boneheaded way to chicken out of that.
