Whitman (preferably the first edition of LoG, although the Deathbed version is a lifetime’s dedication)
Dickinson (the originals, without any of the early editors’ meddling)
Emerson (formal writings>journal)
Thoreau (journal>formal writings)
Hawthorne (short stories first, then novels)
Melville (haven’t read all of his poetry, Confidence-man, or Israel Potter, but everything else is top-notch, except Clarel does drag in some spots)
Poe (pretty much everything)
Twain (TS and HF are a pretty good encapsulation of his career: he went from writing bright colorful tales to satirical and sarcastic condemnations, and following his career from one to the other is fascinating)
H James (every novel is a portrait and every tale is a landscape)
Faulkner (had to put him in because I couldn’t choose any other single writer, all around amazing)

the ambassadors

gravity's rainbow
the sound and the fury

Most popular Steinbeck is unbearable socialist propaganda. It really amazes me that the communist fad of the 30s has retained positive critical assessment over the decades.

Somehow people still think we should teach children that if your dreams don't come true, it's society's fault and you have no choice but to murder your friend. Or that capitalism destroys everything, steals from the truly productive, and that only in a literal FDR commune can there be a productive society.

Steinbeck came up with the worst, least persuasive arguments against American culture. I guess that's why he's popular with high school teachers and students, because they're the only ones dumb enough to uncritically listen to him.

Easy on the ideology bugs. Steinbeck is a good writer. He does have a tendency to be overly romantic but his novels are compelling and have their merits. Also Steinbeck renounced his socialist thoughts later in life.

I did not read this way at all. He killed him because he loved him more than anything else on this world and he knew that they'd never get their farm with him always fuckig things up.
Do you have to politicize everything you read? Is your mind so infected by politics that you've lost the ability to think beyond it?
I mean, it's hard to doubt that part of it was social criticism but it wasn't the core of the text.

critically probs Sound and the Fury (though Absalom and As I Lay Dying are better imo), Leaves of Grass, Poems of Emily Dickinson, Moby Dick, and a tie between Gatsby and Huck Finn. James is too hotly debated still, Hemingway wrote all his best stuff not on US soil (same for Eliot), Salinger was a two hit wonder, Nabokov wasn’t really American, Steinbeck was a literal meme, all of our short storyists and playwrights are cheap magicians, and the only notable books of the past 50 or so years have been Blood Meridean and Gravity’s Rainbow (neither of which are internationally received well, or nearly as well as our “classics”).
