The Judgement fucked me up pretty good. And scenes from a country doctor have stuck with me in this weird way...when I think of that story I feel like I’m recalling a vivid nightmare I actually had at some indistinct point in the past.

reading The Judgment was one of the decisive literary experiences of my youth

A Country Doctor and The Burrow are my current favorite stories

The Castle is my favorite novel, I re-read it recently and was surprised how funny it is

I like Amerika best because it's his funniest and comfy in a weird way. It also has some pretty melancholic and sad moments that really got to me.

>short
To avoid the obvious answers, I'd go with Unglücklichsein, a very early short story of his. The title roughly translates to Being Unhappy but I don't think that's the usual English translation. "Give it up!", although very short, is also among my favorites.

"Der Kübelreiter"
(don't know the english title)

for best "novel" I'd say trial, since it is the most complete.
