The 'protagonists' played by Woody are all completely different characters with different nuances to their personality. Alvy Singer from Annie Hall is different from Sandy Bates from Stardust Memories who is different from Mickey from Hannah & Her Sisters who is different from Isaac Davis from Manhattan etc...

In all of them, Woody has always been playing a character, and not himself. Dostoyevsky is not Raskolnikov after all. Furthermore, all characters serve different functions depending on the film. In Crimes and Misdemeanors or Hannah and Her Sisters, the Woody character compliments the dramatic side of their respective films through humorous subversion. In Annie Hall and Manhattan, the Woody character is largely the engineer of his own romance problems, but the TRUE Woody - the artist behind the whole film - subtly lances their flaws through other methods like cinematography and contrasting scenes against one another.

In Stardust Memories it is other people, fans and producers, who demand his time and attention because he's the one who has the most stability and self-knowledge among them.
