>but this is an actual problem in the philosophy of language
If this is true, then my respect for philosophy has dropped a ton.

Spengler's view on the philosophy of language is the only correct one imo. If there's miscommunication/signal error, just restate it until there's no error.

On a side note, it's kind of shocking that Spengler anticipated the theory of Universal Grammar by about 50 years or so.

I highly doubt that as it sounds much more like a problem with english. Problems in natural language are fun but they aren't serious issues.

>If there's miscommunication/signal error, just restate it until there's no error.
This is so vague and vacuous though. It's like saying "if there's a problem, just like fix the problem." Any step forward in the philosophy of language could be described as a "restatement" if you really wanted to call it that, but that doesn't actually tell me anything even if it's "correct." I mean, let's take the liar paradox. If I try to resolve the obvious issue within the line "this sentence is false" by introducing a third truth value to logic, is that really just a big "restatement" in regards to how deduction works? Seems like a pretty fundamental issue.

Don’t argue with Spengler dogmatists. They don’t care about philosophy, just about reinvigorating the third Reich

>> No.11884758

>>11884739
Stop being ridiculous. No one looks to the philosophy of language to figure out way to state things more clearly. The line "this sentence is false" is only a paradox in a vacuum. In real life, we have so many other referentials to work with that explain the meaning of that line: previous conversational context, body language, tone of voice, etc.

Philosophy is full of idiots and professional obscurantists who see paradoxes and conundrums in trivial matters. It's basically their job to be eloquently stupid.

>>11884758
People are actually pretty fucking great at determining whether their meaning was understood in spoken communication. Writing causes problems, but that has to do with misinterpretation of tone. Legit semantic ambiguities or misinterpretations are basically a non-issue in reality; if something is ambiguous and keeps getting misinterpreted, the speaker will just find a different way of saying it since any message can be communicated in countless different ways. We do this collectively, and thus ambiguous structures are overtaken by new idioms less prone to misinterpretation. Language is so full of fads and constantly changing slang BECAUSE we're so good at getting our meaning across, not the opposite.

>>11886326
R.S. Sprague translates the passage as:

Tell me, have you got a dog?
Yes, and a brute of a one too, said Ctesippus.
And has he got puppies?
Yes indeed, and they are just like him.
And so the dog is their father?
Yes, I saw him mounting the bitch myself, he said.
Well then: isn'tt the dog yours?
Certainly, he said.
Then since he is a father and is yours, the dog turns out to be your father, and you are the brother of puppies, aren't you?
