60% of 4chan is people under the age of 25, who either aren't depressed, haven't been diagnosed, or haven't been taking medication to treat the illness. Depression has become a buzzword in modern internet discourse and /lit/ should feel ashamed to throw it around everywhere. Frogposting because you have no gf isn't clinical depression. Being upset that free market exists because you don't have a minimum wage in your country isn't clinical depression. Getting addicted to opiates for no reason then spending too much money on munchies isn't clinical depression.

There are some genuinely depressed people on 4chan but their depression won't last 20 years and end in suicide, it's most often associated with the fact that they can't socialize, find a job, and achieve anything in life currently. It's closer to a phase than to biological illness.

The "How much they deserved it" doesn't make any sense in relation to the lower levels of suffering.

/pol/pot/ Suffered a 5, yet deserved this low amount the most?

This graph only makes sense for the higher quandrants with this sort of logic.
The bad people should be on the bottom left. They didn't deserve the easy life.

He didn't have real depression.

He never had to worry about getting his shit box in working order to get to college.

He had a full meal plan at university, never had to worry about food.
He never had to eat shitty bland meals and make his own food all the time. He had a nice warm dinner every single night at a nice table growing up.
Never had to worry about rent. Never had to worry about hunger. Never grew so despondent about any of these things he just gave up. Never had to postpone college because he couldn't cough up the shekels.

He didn't have real depression. He had psychogenic depression originating from the bourgeois attitudes of mommy and daddy who thinks temporal saddness needs a trip to the psychiatrist. The diagnosis further affirmed the parents attitudes that something had to be wrong with the boy.
I dealt with patients like him. Prescribe them an SSRI and voilà, they're miraculously better before they even have a chance to achieve the concentration and time required for a therapeutic effect. The chemical imbalance theory is obsolete. Actual cases of depression is triggered by stress or trauma. Most fake cases of depression are actually munchausen syndrome.

Any decent modern textbook on psychiatry or pharmacology emphatically rejects the "serotonin deficiency" hypothesis. It has yet to be replaced with anything simple but impaired neurogenesis and glutamte signalling abnormalities are two things frequently mentioned. Find textbooks written 2015+. Stahl's psychopharmacology comes to mind.

The more controversial aspect of the post was going beyond underlying pathologies and extending it to a trigger or stressor and also adult cases of depression ascribed to munchausen's. You won't find anything on that because the reaction to even casually mentioning it in the discussion section would be career suicide. Patient blaming, unequal access, et cetera. Especially in this era where people hashtag their ailments and politicize them and suddenly play the role of an expert.

The only reason Robert E. Lee is higher on the suffering scale than Anne Frank is because he foresaw America's descent into a murderous tyranny. And that countless innocents like Anne Frank were condemned to horrible deaths because of his failure, for which he blamed only himself.

>Getting addicted to opiates for no reason then spending too much money on munchies isn't clinical depression.

It's a confusing graph. By "how much they deserved it", it means "how much they deserved to suffer", not "how much they deserved the level of suffering they experienced". I agree that it's very poorly phrased.

>He didn't have real depression.
I don't like DFW, I think he was a hack and a brianlet, but you can be suicidally depressed without "objective" hardship. I was a severely depressed child, and I assure you that depression does not depend on financial hardship, it depends on emotional hardship.

Vonnegut saw some shit during WWII, while Trump is a spoiled rich kid. Clearly the former suffered much more than the latter.

Why does Mark Twain deserve more suffering than Vonnegut?

I've been here since long before /lit/ existed, but if reddit is embracing your memes, it means they're reddit-tier, by definition. And yes, I did have to google "gregory berrycone"; my main board is /a/, not this shithole.
