From previous thread-
>David Drake. There's also his RCN books which are a Aubrey-Maturin inspired space opera series.

oh this guy, I hated those books. I read like two and had to quit- the premise sounds great but it feels like all he took from Master and Commander is that Aubrey hates foreigners and that Maturin is good at duelling, and then made two traits the only ones his characters have. Also Space-Britain has but a single planet so it's hard to understand why they're so smug.

Anyways speaking of badass covers this is an absolutely fantastic book

Pretty much what I meant too. There's this orc war for some high stakes, but quality-wise it's about as bad as so far. You can find better stuff elsewhere.

I think what really soured me is (if you recall) a time skip after the drow siege. I am of the opinion our protagonists (in general story telling) deserve a break and time to savor their victory. But after opening the first book establishing this, I see an advertisement for a spin off series featuring some young farm boy who gets tangentially involved with Drizzt.

I don’t know, maybe it’s the 4chan autism in me, but at that point, and especially after Wulfgars solo, I’m just feeling a heavy commercialized product than a story Salvatore is trying to give me. The orc kingdom sounds neat, is this the famed thousand arrow kingdom? Would be interesting to see Drizzt react to other “civilized” monster races.

>> No.11881787

>>11881780
There was a point - sometime after Wulfgar "died", I think - where Salvatore wanted to quit, but he was told that if he didn't they'd give Drizzt to someone else to keep the story going. I think that was the point, at the very latest, when it became a product rather than a story.

The orc bit is the kingdom of Many-Arrows, yes, but I think the books took place a while before it was really established, and to my recollection they just behaved like your usual all-destroying orc horde.

From a commercial point of view, does it make more sense to produce a series rather than a standalone novel? Would you sell more copies if you sold your 900 pages story as three 300 pages volumes? I understand that smaller books could sell better because they're easy to carry around, but could it be that delivering your story in separate installments could also build up hype and generate word of mouth, resulting in more sales with each new book? Seems odd that literally every single SFF book coming out these days is part of a series.

I follow a couple on Goodreads, notably J.G. Keely whose main fault is that he does not like BotNS.
>What is the your most frequent method of finding your next book to read?
I get recommendations from authors and reviewers with good taste, this thread, friends etc and then I read a couple of reviews (at least on positive and one negative review) on Goodreads to decide if it's for me.

So far I've read 45 books this year, so about 1 book every week.

You are the one completely ignoring the fact that publishers know full well to whom they are marketing shitty fantasy and that the covers, the blurbs and probably the novel's name would be completely different if it was any good. You are the one who still hasn't noticed the uniformity in the genre. Guess it's going to take another dozen badly written series for you to get a clue. For the rest of us, two or three was enough.

What cookie cutter fantasy? It's a debut self pubbed work with less than 100 ratings. You're the ape that said a book must be terrible because it has the word Chronicler in its name (Hint:The protagonist is a Chronicler, maybe that has to do something with it). You don't even know what it's about but you're somehow already 100% sure it's terrible. That's why I called you a dumbfuck and a cretin.
Who knows, it might even be terrible but that doesn't change the fact that your opinion on it is worth less than the fart out of a dog's arse.

Spiral Wars by Joel Shepherd is one of the better ones going on right now. Space opera about the crew of a battleship that mutinies and flees human space after their captain is murdered by a conspiracy, and they get drawn into a even bigger conspiracy about ancient Berserker AIs that everybody thought were long dead.

It's really more of a "space opera where everybody is in the military" kind of setup than military science fiction. Interesting aliens, interesting plot, neat action sequences (like the attack on the high-gravity vault) and the AIs get more nuance than the "beep boop kill all biologicals" most authors give them.

They're the weakest RotE series and are more YA than the other books but they're fairly short individually and still enjoyable overall, especially if you like the general series and Hobb's writing/style.

The plot draws quite a bit from the Liveship and Tawny Man books and more importantly plays a lot into the final series so it's not a good idea to skip it. Then again it's not a good idea to skip any of them because in the end it's one big story.

honestly id be okey with it it. CDPR did their own stories for witcher and only took the setting and characters from the books along with some historic events. it got to the point that the author got assblasted cause he refused a royalty deal that was offered to him and instead sold the license for a few thousand bucks. i think he is trying to sue CDPR for 16 million or something. thats besides the point though. even though i dont like many of sandersons works. im pretty sure if the cpdr aproaches them like they did witcher theyd not only be better than the books but probably good games too.

Polish copyright law allows for these kinds of cases though, it basically says the original creator is entitled to sue for greater compensation if something becomes a runaway hit. He figured the games wouldn't amount to much, which he cannot be faulted for considering the poor showing of previous novel-to-game adaptions (the Wheel of Time FPS) and the quality of video game writing in general. Hell, the original Witcher was not actually that good until the Enhanced Edition came out, and CDPR was practically going "Take my game! Please!" and doing giveaways and 90% discounts several years.

tl;dr is that Witchers are turned into albinos by the treatment done to make them into Witchers, and Ciri is a half-Witcher.
