/his/ is such a shit board. Idk what you're interested in, but I like French History and I have some recs. "Spectacular Realities" is about French entertainment at the turn of the century, and the section on the morgue is fascinating.

Fred Cooper is another good author who focuses on French Colonialism. I've only read his journal articles, but I've heard very good things about his book "Colonialism in Question". And I'm working my way through "Discipline and Punish" by Foucault, which so far might be my favorite history book ever.

They aren't bad, especially for an introduction but I'm more a fan of Byzantium: state and society by Warren Treadgold. Just a bit more scholarly and consistent (but both are fantastic none the less).
