Eliot's genius registers to me as the least maddening, since no matter how deep or precisely stated here insights are, consistent sanity prevails. Most creative geniuses are quite nutty in some fashion or phase, including Shakespeare and Montaigne, so I seldom trust any of them completely, and keep them all at a distance like the old common reader that I am.

My neglect of Tolstoy and Austen and Proust is something I can't justify on any objective basis. The novel, as a form, just doesn't work well for me, though autobiography extensive as Goethe's does, much as his memory must have been tampered with by wishful selection. Proust's obsessive jealousy, while it is funny to contemplate in extracts, is so alien to me that I can't enter his perspective for long stays. It makes me squirm with claustrophobia, impatient for fresh air, richly as he sees what's in his range of vision. Dickinson, haunting her own room, is by comparison a cosmic visionary, luxuriously suggestive of the pleasure in becoming a suburban hermit, however one steals the means.
