Muslims preserved a lot of Greek works; especially the works of Plato and Aristotle, until they were translated out of Arabic into Latin and rediscovered by Western philosophers, yeah. But Christian monks still had a role.

Anon, where do you think the arabs got the greek texts from in the first place? who do you think had been preserving the GREEK knowledge throughout all those centuries? Does the Byzantine empire not exist in your mind?

I'm weak atheist coming from a Catholic academic tradition. I hope there is a god because I would like to think that at death there is some kind of objective authority that will say "Yes, all of the stupid shit you participated in was not just wasted hours" etc.

Go out into the middle of the desert at night anon. Escalante, New Nexico, White Creek Basin, any of these will do. Go somewhere far where the city lights cannot reach you. Lay in a sleeping bag and watch the ecliptic path of Venus give way to the pattering commute of stars. Watch the plane of your world dip through this massive disc, swirling at mind-numbing speeds towards oblivion, as the silence of the desert night rings in your ears. Lose yourself in the peaceful stillness of massive silent things.

Out there you will encounter something, and only then will you realize that the fundamental has no name.

BELIEF IN GOD IS SOMETHING IMMANENT; NOONE CAN BE CONVINCED OF GOD'S BEING, NOR BE MADE TO BELIEVE IN GOD, IF THAT ONE LACKS NOBILITY; THE NOBLE ONES DO NOT NEED TO BE CONVINCED OF GOD'S BEING, NOR BE MADE TO BELIEVE, BECAUSE THEY ALREADY BELIEVE.

What exactly happens when you do this? What is faith? I ask as someone curiously seeking, but not getting very far.

>> No.11864457

>>11864422
faith is just choosing to believe out of humility rather than logic or intellect. as people we are taught that we must always seek the answers to things through logic, however a thinking person understands that great questions cant be solved with logic; there are far too many variables to account for to actually form a strictly “logical” argument for or against god. what we think of as logic is really just mental gymnastics to justify our desired outcome. atheists want god not to exist and so they use “logic” to “disprove him.”

so in a sense have faith as well. thats the thing. EVERYONE has faith, just not in the same thing.

so now you know that you have faith, you must decide whether to put your faith in what is good or that which is not good (sin). enlightened persons understand that JESUS CHRIST is good. and so we channel all of our faith in him.

so the question is, anon: now that you are aware of your faith, what will you use it for?

>What is faith?
MY understanding of faith came to me when I became very sick due to a bad case of malpractice. i was not expected to survive, and I spent nearly 3 years on bed rest fighting for y life. One day things became so acutely painful that I began to pray. I'd never done so before in my life, and I never did so again after. It soothed me. I believe faith, at least for myself, is a survival mechanism. Sometimes when things are bad enough, something within a human being breaks and it can be liberating to believe things are beyond one's control. It relieves the pressure.

I despise the concept of relying on something other than myself. I am repulsed by faith created in crisis.

>faith is some resource that humans accrue and spend unconsciously
I have faith you'll one day pull your head out of your ass and learn how to capitalize you're sentences. Also, you need to study more if you think logic requires faith in any capacity.
