Lady a shit

>> No.11859581

Man, if Wolfe weren't so stubborn about everything being an on-the-nose Christian allegory, I'm sure people would actually have read The Knight. It's the best fantasy book I've ever read, even if the dream sequences do get annoying. I feel like half of them are only going to have any value on a reread once I've finished The Wizard, which probably put a lot of people off. Also, having his reputation for being hard to follow, he could have done with not putting the hardest scene to follow first. But past that, it's much easier to follow than something like BotNS, and it's pretty much the only thing I've read that pulls off that Oblivion sort of medieval fantasy while maintaining interesting prose and a developing plot.

Oh, also working against the book's popularity, he makes weird choices in when he brings up sex. The mentions are basically limited to instances of rape, statuatory or straight up forced stuff, typically with explicitly giant cocks that can only be taken after giving birth to an exceptionally large baby. I'm sure that's a conscious choice and I'll understand why he made it more after I finish the second book, but it was an unfortunate one for him to make, as it probably put a lot of people off recommending it.

Mistborn has no business being in any top 10 list.

HP and Ender are questionable too but you can make an argument that they belong up there for their cultural impact if not for the quality of books.

Throw in Malazan and Gormenghast instead of any of them and you have the makings of a decent list.

Although I have a feeling all the stupid fucking teenage le wrong generation overcompensating edgelords that frequent this place are going to call that the worst top 10 list in existence because of all the popular works included.

Has anyone here finished The Wizard Knight series? The Wizard is losing me fast. I'm at a point where the only surviving thread of plot from the first book that I'm sure is going to continue is the rescue of Pouk and Ulfa, and I'm not caring much. Especially when he killed all the mystery with the ten-to-twenty page lore dump from Baki and Able. pseudo-write your story without any thought to prose and such
just write all the plot beats like you were outlining, but a little more detail, and dont skip over the parts where the characters move between them
then when you hit the end, go back to the beginning and do it all over

the nice thing about this is that it'll tell you from the start whether or not you want to finish the story you've started
an outline doesn't give you much more of an idea of whether or not your story says something meaningful
this does
and if you don't like it, you've spent a night and an afternoon doing it, and that's all
try a new idea that covers the stuff you felt was missing from your first one

>> No.11864066

Just start writing down stuff about characters, plot points, and how it all goes together. Maybe use the three-act system or even Hero's Journey outline.

A book is trash

>If it's popular

>If it has a cover that's not minimalist or straight out of the 70's

>If it has females in any leading roles, if the author is female, if it has any non white good guys (because that's obviously pandering)

>if one even slightly dislikes a synopsis that is written by publishers to attract casuals.

All you anons who subscribe to the above beliefs are worse than all the shilling furries, musclefags, weebs and waifufags put together. I sincerely hope you all die in a dumpster fire.

As much as l love both genres, I would like to see them separate.
10 best fantasy. 10 best scifi. too much is cut out from consideration when you merge the lists.

That said, fuck Harry Potter. And while I liked Ender's Game as a stand alone book, the extended series did nothing for me.
I was happy to see Donaldson on the list. His series was spectacular.
I honestly think ASOFAI should be on for best fantasy. And that isn't buying into hype (COUGH harry potter). I was a fan of the books since the 1990s.

Peter F Hamilton's commonwealth series should be on the list (size, scope, characters, world building, and believably of the universe), And how the fuck to you make a top 10 list for sci fi and have no Asimov or Arthur C Clarke, or Robert A. Heinlein?

The hatred of things because they are popular always confused me. I despise the hipster attitude of "I liked it before it was cool!"
Now, admittedly, I do somewhat feel that way about Game Of Thrones, but that is because people make such a big deal about the TV series which, in all honesty, is shit. It breaks from the books too much.
And I wouldn't even mind that if the shows fanatics actually picked up the books to see how they were, but most won't.

covers I never cared about. most aren't even approved by the author. who gives a fuck?

synopsis too. how can people say a book is trash if they didn't even open it themselves?

it's your third that draws contention.
I've read books with great female characters, as support, primary, antagonists, and leads. But in all honestly, a lot of books I pick up with a female as a primary character, I expect her to be treated like a flawless mary sue, because she usually is, and that is boring.
I don't write a book off as trash for having a female lead, but I do tend to go in with an attitude that I'll probably put the book down.
Female authors? The same. Some great books written by women. But it seems 2/3 of the books I try by female authors are trash.
I don't write these things off automatically, and I've read some great stuff by women, and with female characters. But there is legit reason to see a woman's name as the author and ask "is this going to be worth my time?"

>The hatred of things because they are popular always confused me
It's less because things are popular, and more because what things would have to be like in order to be popular.

The lowest common denominator is, as we all know, absolute and total garbage. In order to pander to the masses, the story would have to be shallow, poorly written, and overall easily digestible. It can't have any difficult text or prose that the greater audience might be confused by. Its characters and plot have to be easy to understand lest it loses the audience as they begin to wonder what the hell is happening. It has to pick up quickly with no buildup or else the reader will find it boring and lame. It can't hold a genuinely deep and meaningful message, because such things tend to be controversial and about half the potential audience will disagree and therefore find the whole work a whole bunch of shit. It can't possibly challenge the readers any or prompt them to any manner of personal improvement.

Instead it must provide for their lower and more animalistic desires: excitement, catharsis, lust, and the very lowest rung of intelligence. Throw in a shallow twist that anyone with two brain cells can see coming and feel really clever about it when they do. Some easy and universal theme like "Love conquers all", or the opposite "The world is shit", to trick the audience into thinking there's a greater theme and message in this - even though they already KNEW the message and are only looking for affirmation to what they already think they know. The author will have to dive deeply into these matters, so that even in the off-chance he might have enough intellect and skill to pull off something more complex, he would never have the time for it what with all the sex scenes and other stupid shit taking his time and attention.

Any book aspiring higher will prompt disagreement: each of the above points the book lacks, each thing it tries to do better or more complex, will drop potential readers. The only way to keep them all invested is for the book to be hopelessly mediocre - and therefore you really shouldn't bother yourself with it.

see, but like all things, there are exceptions.
there are some rather esoteric works that were never popular with the masses, that snobs love to go to as great works of unappreciated art, that really are crap.
And there are some things that reach popularity that do not reduce themselves to the lowest common denominator.

Just because something is popular, that might be enough to make you wonder if it's actually decent or not, but it strikes me as nothing but self flagulating elitism to say "the ignorant normies like this, so I hate it on principal and am just going to assume it is intellectually beneath me."

I mean, fucking "War And Peace" and "Crime and Punishment" are respectably popular.
And "A catcher in the rye," while well known, is mostly known because of people who think they're smart and read it, mostly so they can say "I've read 'catcher in the rye."

Now, which of those is a lowest common denominator piece of garbage that really means nothing and conveys nothing, and which ones are sophisticated, and not only respect your intelligence, but actually demand it, otherwise you're wasting it's time?
