I can speak with a little authority since I've had three short stories published in real, although small, journals.
In order the best professions to have while writing on the side are Security Guard, Bottleshop Boy and Council Worker.

Anything where you interact with different types of people. That helps you to have a wider experience with humanity. What you don't want to do is do something that surrounds you with other lit folks like writing professor or editor because then you will just churn out narrow shit like DFW or Zadie Smith.

>>11828048
would be fine. Those are totally different careers though, so a pretty weird narrowed down set....

None. Wallace quit his jobs because they didn't give him time to write. Only /lit/ jobs are anything that gives you time to read/write on the job itself.

just take amphetamines after leaving your job each day and you can manically read and write for another 10 hours. time isnt the issue, its about inspiration and experience.

Work as a security guard during night shifts. You have to do some patrolling, but for the most parts you'll be left to your own devices to do whatever you want.
You could also pick a job that comes with a long commute in a vehicle you don't need to drive yourself. I know of an author who wrote his first book on the 2 hour trip that he took from home to work every day.

Yes!

My buddy is a night shift security guard. His job is to watch the cameras and patrol the building every hour. However, he has no supervision and there isn't anything valuable in the building, so he falls asleep almost every shift without repercussion- when he's not sleeping, he's doing homework.

Needless to say, night shift security guard is a god tier /lit/ job

Nothing if you're born the spoiled brat child of two wealthy professors like DFW.
Always love how these idiots try to act authentic by dressing down and looking all street.

Wealthy people resent those who struggled in life because they know that's what builds character. They can wear whatever rags they want but they can never truly be self made and deep down, they hate it.
