Am I the only one that hates overly explained magic systems?

Magic should be free, and wild, and impossible to quantify or often even truly predict. If you bind it down it just becomes science - science that can control minds or shoot fireballs, but science nonetheless. All the fantasy and luster will be gone from it, and it's just mundane and fucking lame now.

Sanderson is a fucking hack, and people need to stop gobbling his knob for essentially destroying the fantasy and wonder in magic.

If you've already gone through the classics of fantasy, then you should set yourself for disappointment: the best of new fantasy can match only the mediocrest of what you've already read. Unless you want to go down the same road as I have and cringe through all of it, give a pass to the longer doorstopper series such as Malazan - even with the occasional high point, they're largely just a waste of your time.

The Name of the Wind is not terrible, nevermind what the shitposts say, so long as you steer well clear from the sequel. Some of the newer Discworld books might qualify for new fantasy and are still pretty good, even if nowhere near as good as Pratchett's best. I've also picked up the bunny meme from here, and from what I've read it's actually all right - it has its own voice and feel that I rather like.

That's about it on top of my head. I hope you can find something you like and draw your own conclusions.

It's the length that does it. Malazan is thousands of pages of mostly-shit, while Name of the Wind is only a single book of largely-shit. So there's a lot less commitment involved: you can just pick one book and be done with it.

I regret wasting so much time getting 7 books into the Wheel of Time, but I don’t want to quit after spending so much time on it. I’ve heard that the next 4 books are pure shite while the last ones were all just boring.

Case in point - this is exactly why I advocate against Malazan and its ilk. You get consumed by it and feel like you absolutely need to finish it since you started, even though it's mostly pretty bad and just wastes so much of your time.

Might as well finish your endeavor, though, at this point. At least then you'll know what you're talking about when you tell people to not read Wheel of Time.

He finished the Merlin series but it felt like he was rushed trying to wrap up a bunch of loose story threads because the story had dragged out too long. The Merlin books were supposed to be a trilogy not 5 books.

There’s five Amber short stories after the Merlin books. He was going to do five more short stories after that to wrap up loose ends in the Merlin series then write more Amber novels later.

I'm another anon who's read a lot of modern fantasy and also commits to finishing a series that I start. This includes MYTH, Xanth, almost all of Dune ,a million other shitty things I read in highschool, currently on book 10 of Robin Hobb's world and so on.

I agree that name of the wind and first law get more shit than they deserve and are worth reading. First law spinoff trilogy isn't as good so plan on skipping that.

As long as we're talking about popular things that people hate R Scott Bakker is actually pretty good, especially the first three books. I've tried to start a discussion about them in three previous threads but it always gets ignored so I get the impression people here don't like him. Bakker's books get a little more amusing when you read his blog where he's just an enormous ass to the online academic community and you realize that his characters are just representations of classic philosophical positions that he trots out to show why his views are superior.

Dark Tower series is really good with western / post apocalyptic vibes. If you like that you might find yourself branching off into some other King novels to learn where characters come from. It's a long commitment but the first book will be a good indicator of whether or not you'll like the other ones.

If you don't want a series but just want one book I'd say Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Really fun charming period novel. Be forewarned of two potential issues. The first is that it is written in the victorian style so expect chapters that are essentially meaningless small talk in tea rooms. The other issue is there's times where the author just really clearly thinks their writing is cute and gets a bit carried away with it if that makes sense? I mean to say that she tries very hard to set up this british genteel charm and when she fails it's a bit galling.

A few popular suggestions that I'd stay away from follow.

The Witcher books: first two are okay but I think it loses a lot in the translation.

Metro 2033: Decent atmospheric writing and a cool setting but frankly it's just obnoxiously bleak and depressing in only a slightly more philosophical way than your typical grimdark fantasy.

Gregory Maguire novels: Read them a long a time ago and wasn't blown away. Wicked is okay but the sequels are worse. The Ugly Stepsister one was good

Sanderson: Only read Mistborn which was fine but nothing to write home about. Felt like a King or a Grisham or one of the worse sue grafton books where it's just a serial writer trotting out his craft. That being said if you like Jak and Daxter 2 the whole world is basically that.

Outlander Books: Actually lowkey there are such fun summer guilty reading novels and as an added bonus when you meet lonely women in their 50s it's a great conversation starter.

Anyone read The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russel? Man this book is super duper slow and I'm getting really tired of everyone's picture-perfect family style interactions with perfect puns and perfect emotions. And this straight up annoying shit is interspersed with the even more annoying "what I went through is too horrifying to describe but I will let it out in bits and pieces in a stupid roundabout way like a character from Ace Attorney"

Does this shit ever get good? Do we actually get to some interesting horror? Or is this just an "intellectual" circlejerk on theology

These books are good. Unfortunately:
Some of the scenes that would have been the most interesting were blatantly skipped over in the first book while the author elaborated upon ones I didn't care about.

Also I'm characterfagging trash and I hated what happened to Supaari in the second book. I also absolutely despised how Emilio missed all the action in the second book and how Ha'anala died. Most of all, I hated how Gina fucking died. The author has a fuck you tier tragedy boner.

There is a conclusion in the first book but it is written like a proper duology as in the story continues properly, the author doesn't do dumb shit like run out of ideas halfway through the sequel like a lot of the shit authors. The second book organically feels like a sequel to the second while also expanding upon the events within the first book to illustrate the depth of MISUNDERSTANDING that you would otherwise miss out on if you read only the first book and not the second.

However, these books never have any cosmic horror in them so if you are after horror, I would highly recommend the Blindopraxia or Alistair Reynolds. These books are a lot more about personal tragedy and loss of faith.

Eon is his most popular and it is a great. It's a Big Dumb Object novel with lots of hard science. I've only read that and Queen of Angels, which was also good but very different, a really ambitious (not always successful?) future mystery about a cop and a serial killer and going into his mind.

I've been meaning to read Forge of God his first contact novel. Darwin's Radio is another of his big books but it's about a plague and I'm usually not into those kinds of novels. Blood Music is a weird sci-horror novel.

There's always that one guy who has to make it weird and uncomfortable for everyone.
The curse of 4chan.
Now we need a new topic.

Aside from the King Arthur stories, I think Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles influenced generations of writers with the orphan trope.

I'm reading Redemption too and I'm really enjoying it. I love the Xeelsee stories set during the near utopic time before mankind made contact, was conquered, broke free and then became xenocidal maniacs. (I know this is technically a different universe) I'm also liking how there's a lot more action than in previous books like the Ghosts fighting the Qax early in the book.

Based off the very first chapter I think this new universe isn't a reboot, but a kind of sequel to the original one. That Michael Poole is 100% the one from Timelike Infinity.
