Norway was a colonial asset from the treaty of kalmar at the end of the Viking era until the king of Sweden let them go in 1905. Most of Norway in that time was mountain villages and hansa encampments-if you wanted to go to university you would have to go to Denmark. The good literature doesn't translate well, like Garborg and Hauge. Most 18-1900 lit was social commentary and trying to find an identity after becoming independent after 500 years of being a Danish colony. Much Norwegian lit is still hampered from international acclaim by being too nation centered, when nobody outside of Norway gives a shit about nynorsk vs bokmål. Jon Fosse somehow manages to be somewhat popular, and Knausgård is a decent airport lit Proust

Hunger would be Knut Hamsun. And yeah, I guess the nordic countries are relatively prolific; it's good to remember that they were mostly poor as for most of history, without a large aristocracy or middle-class. You'll mostly be looking at the mid 1800s and onwards for Scandi-lit.

I don't think I had to read one Norwegian book in high school. I read Lord of the Flies for English, but that's all I remember.

To be honest I never really thought Norwegian was a good language to read/write in, it just feels awkward. To me English is much more evocative.

Yeah it's pretty weird how North Germanic peoples are pretty much completely unaccomplished in the artistic world. Germans, Russians, and Celts have all made massive achievements in art compared to Scandinavia.

To be fair pretty much every country on Earth has been completely devoid of artistic talent for many decades now. It's because we achieve things only to be as lazy and hedonistic as possible, and we work solely to maintain our laziness and hedonism, with no higher purpose. Turns out sometimes you need a war to fuck up the traditional order of life and knock some creativity into people, which never really happened in Scandinavian fishing villages nor North America. Everything just stays the same. The land is peaceful, the people are bright, but nobody accomplished a SINGLE FUCKING THING.

Just look at the Scandinavians when they went down to Normandy and actually got involved in some wars and changed their way of life. They became massively accomplished and conquered fucking England.

Does the average anything have knowledge of literature? I know people who read classics in high school only to never read a single decent book again. Throughout history, and certainly today, literature's remained the interest of a specific subset of people. Most people did not, do not, and will not care for it.

I believe the quality of a region's writers is partly related to the underlying quality of the language itself.

Take English or French for example, both with two well developed literary traditions. Both languages had the benefit of national empires that spread the language to millions of people around the globe. Norwegian, in contrast, remained largely parochial.

Thus the feedback that would grow and enhance a language's literature compounded faster and with larger principals in English or French or Spanish, but less so for Scandinavian languages.

Also northern European and Germanic peoples, with the exception of the Anglo-Saxons, tend to have their strengths lie in practical arts more than the purely aesthetic. In Germany for instance their scientists and engineers always seem to outshine their poets and novelists, and this is probably partly derivable from the structure of the German language itself.
