What is the best way for a new author to get exposure in the age of hollow and ephemeral social media? Is it even worth it to try for attention anymore?

Being some kind of minority generally helps. Following current literary trends also helps

Ask Tao Lin.

But in the current day accelerationist algorithmically driven instant attention economy being a novelist is not generally the best way to get noticed tbqhwusenpaiim

Write good books, fagtron. Maybe start with short stories.

Easy:
Write in a genre
Crank out fresh and good copy often.
Build fanbase through the socials.
Update socials daily and fresh copy as often as possible.
Rinse and repeat.
Remember: copy is like fish: put it out fresh because no one buys it old.

Get a short story published in a literary journal, a small one first is easier

Get published in progressively better journals until you have reached the top tier ones or you have developed some sort of following

Then write your full length novel, you will already have an audience who knows you and anticipates your work with pleasure

You've got to adapt to the times. That means playing the game. Get on social media. Interact with people, and groom anyone who might be a potential fan like a pedo file grooms children, even if it's just an old lady your grandma knows.

Post lines from your book. Respond to comments. Seem active and alive and draw attention to yourself. Let everyone know what you do by doing it openly and publicly.

Popular writers these days are public presences. They're not the elusive reclusive weirdo stuffed up in a cabin stereotype these days, unless they're very good and an established name in the publishing industry.
