LitRPG Edition

Didn't see a thread up.

I just got into LitRPG and I feel like a brainlet but holy fuck I'm actually enjoying myself immensely. Currently started on Chaos Seeds.

Anyone else actually enjoy this shit? I feel like it's the 50 Shades of Fantasy.

From what I’m hearing it sounds like the prose match the plot in terribleness.

>Rod's a little wound up by Tay and her constant display of body parts. "Shapely" is used approximately 430 times during the course of Dark Lord to describe the de-winged Angel, predominantly those parts that are neck-down. Greenwood is less finicky about her other attributes: on page 13, her "dark" eyes are described two paragraphs later as "emerald". But with such shapeliness on display, I'm surprised Rod ever gets the occasion to look at her face.

I really like the Foundation trilogy by Asimov because it has this feel which seems to be caused by the fact that it was writted before Turing invented computers, so even though it's in the far future with faster than light space travel and all that high-tech stuff, there's no computers, no all-encompassing surveillance, no inescapable telecommunications network. People still rely on books, newspapers, and delivered notes. Since digital wasn't a think yet Asimov seemed to think the future of tech would be crazy nuclear stuff like nuclear-powered personal radiation shields and levitation and shit. It makes so that even though it's in interstellar galactic space it still has this old feel, where revolts and rebellions against empire are actually believable or even expected. Any other sci-fi combine FTL interstellar travel with the non-existence of digital electronics?

The most obvious recommendation is to read old books. Heinlein is really hit or miss but he has this feel. Unlike Asimov, it's the result of deliberate philosophy: he believed that technology + increased population density eventually made all settled societies repressive and selected their inhabitants to be drones. Solution: settle the infinite frontier of space. Try Tunnel in the Sky, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Have Spacesuit Will Travel.

Vance is much more laid back and ambivalent than Heinlein (and he's on a whole other level in terms of style). Check out Demon Princes, Cadwal, Little Big Planet, The Languages of Pao.

Another thing about the Foundation is that it kind of reads like history. Not historical fiction which is a fictional story in a historical setting, but a fictional history. It's almost like reading Herodotus or Gibbon or something where you keep timeskipping from generation to generation with each generation having its own set of main characters/players, because it's about a culture/civilization as a whole rather than a group of characters' narrative in that setting.

I had a idea a while back about using the genre as a framing device for cyberpunk sendup of "nerd culture" shit, with corporations using exploitative alternate-reality games, loot crates, "content influencer" shit to keep people docile and enslaved.

now obviously this is absolutely not what people who read litRPG would be interested in.

>>11808090
On that note what are some other "fantasy/scifi but it's a history book" stories? I read Robert Charles Wilson's Julian Comstock a while back and thought it was entertaining, though it was framed more as a memoir/biography from the titular character's friend.

And there's also Sir John Hackett's Third World War, which was written as a "how a non-nuclear WW3 could happen" via the framing device of being a history book.

The Warlord Chronicles by Cornwell is probably the best example of historical "fantasy." The "magic" in the series is left up to the reader to decide if it's actually real or not (unless Cornwell himself has said it's real or not.)

Depends on how fantastic it is. Umberto Eco's Name of the Rose for example is simply a story that took place in the past. On the other hand Mary Gentle's Ash: A Secret History uses a similar "translation of lost medieval documents" framing device but turns out to be very fantastic.

There's also the Aubrey-Maturin series, which has descriptions of ship parts to rival a science fiction novel except it's like 180 years in the past and the ships aren't in space. (David Drake was heavily inspired by it for the RCN series, which IMO is one of the best modern space opera/adventure series out there)

The House in Fata Morgana is really good.

World End Economica is by the Spice and Wolf author and is about day traders on the moon. Might be worth holding off on it for now though, since a new translation of the first game was promised ages ago.

The Fault - Milestone series.

Muv-Luv.

uh, Kindred Spirits on the Roof. I can't think of anything else that's super notable for having a quality story.

The Demon Princes, Tschai, Cadwal--all excellent series by Vance. If you're looking to stay in the light-hearted vein of Cugel and "Rhialto the Marvellous", I would try "Showboat World", "Space Opera" or "Ports of Call"+"Lurulu".

Honestly, you could almost close your eyes and point at a Vance bibliography to pick something worthwhile. If you like the style, you've got a lot of entertaining reading ahead of you!

Also just a thought on why ricebooks are so based. Well presuming you're not accepting 2-3 book/novella stuff that's been later published in a collected edition:

The Icarus Hunt by Timothy Zahn. Fun space adventure/mystery story, I've read it several times and it's still entertaining since I've generally forgotten the twist between readings.

Curse of Chalion by LMMB, kinda. It's a series but more of a "connected works" thing, the first book is effectively standalone since the second is about a different character, and the third is set 200 years before the other two.

Passage at Arms and The Dragon Never Sleeps by Glen Cook. Two standalone scifi novels that are good, the first is essentially a Das Boot style story about the crew of a stealth ship (it's technically a prequel but is standalone), while the other is a very tightly written space opera.

I've been thinking recently about what it is that makes modern fantasy so inferior to things like anime and visual novels, and I think the reason is that anime and VNs act as wish fulfillment for the reader, while modern fantasy acts as wish fulfillment for the author. For example modern fantasy books will be filled with whatever fetish crap the author particularly likes, like cuckoldry etc., and not fetish crap that will appeal to the reader. That's what makes the difference.

All those other things have multiple authors and writers, occasionally also corporate masters and investors, all of whom have their own desires - so in the end it all tends to even out and only the lust for money and recognition wins through, and the only way to get that is to appeal to the audience.

But books only have one author, so that one author can put in whatever the fuck he wants.

There's different sorts of "unrealistic". Things that don't exist in our world at all are far easier to accept than things that DO exist but work wrong. Your mind will readily accept the presence of magic and dragons, as they're suitably far removed from our reality to not muck up with what we know to be real... but in our medieval times women didn't fight, let alone have literally half of every army be women, so it clashes with what we know much more. It'd be the same as Samwell Tarly getting a lot of exercise and shit but never losing weight: fat people lose weight when shit goes down.

It's like an Uncanny Valley for realism.

You should be able to get similar results with a modern SF with high-tech computers if you just simply don't go the FTL route. Say there are a couple of years before a message arrives, and then as many years more before you get the reply. A controllant will travel far more slowly than the speed of light. Play around with cryo-tech, and maybe some time dilation depending on what speeds you go with. You could easily have decades before a central response team is able to react even in the best case scenario, and that seems to me like many attempts at empires or whatever would inevitably lead to being thinly stretched out.

Computers have little, if anything, to do with it imo.

Help guys, I was wondering where my story can go. I'm not an aspiring writer or anything, just do this for fun but it's my first world and I'm getting stuck on the storyline.

>tfw just spent a month building a magic system and all the nuances of the world under this system
>fast forward to now - can't figure out how to add a villain into the mix

The story was of how two men, when researching magic, end up inventing a weapon that allows them to get stronger when they kill someone, and their lust for power leads to events that end up killing 99% of the population. This destroys a large part of the planet and almost all knowledge of the magic is lost.

A thousand years later, a small kid discovers the weapon, unintentionally kills someone, and gets stronger. Now I wanted the kid to be the protagonist, but can't think of what the end goal would be.

The kid journeys to the school of magic and learns way too fast because of the power granted by the death. Now I'm just stuck at this point because the new world is filled with pretty primitive people and I can't think of something that could be the antagonist. I was so engrossed in the magic system that I forgot completely about battling evil and such.

My previous storyline about the destruction of the world is actually pretty detailed even though I wanted it to just be background for the second book, origins of the weapon, into to the magic system, etc that the reader can read after the "main" book to gain further insight. How do I think of a good antagonist, /lit/?

Do you need a clear-cut villain? Would a couple of opposing factions be enough to get the ball rolling? Could the protagonist make some mistakes and end up seen as the villain, with him either turning to the dark side or just trying to survive? Wanting to bring back or save a loved one is a classic for a reason.

There are any number of ways to go about creating a conflict. Either that or see if you can create enough curiosity about the magic system and world building that you don't need an epic conflict for the reader to stay interested.

You can pirate, then order the bibliography. Unless you want to collect. Then using a service like goodreads would help in collecting editions.

There's another website like goodreads, but more for pro critics, so I can't help you there.

Yeah, the main stuff I've had trouble finding has been niche stuff from people who don't publish through regular channels (eg, Graydon Saunders, who only uses Google Play because he doesn't like how Amazon treats its employees), older/obscure stuff that nobody remembers at all because it's small press or forgotten to the sands of time or had their careers killed because their publishing house shut down (eg, David Mace, a guy who wrote several good WWIII scifi novels but found that he wasn't making as much money as his regular job translating Russian), or niche things like furry fiction, erotica, serial fiction through patreon, authors who released one or two books and then dropped off the face of the earth, etc.

Though sometimes the book was on Mobilism or elsewhere at one point, but the links expired and it never got uploaded elsewhere.

Hi my name is Ganymede Jean-Louis de la Trémoïlle, Duc de Thouars, Prince de Talmond, President of the Humanists, and I have long golden hair with a divinely radiant aura and diamond blue eyes like poisoned daggers and a lot of people tell me I look like Louis XIV (AN: if u don’t know who he is get da hell out of here!). I’m not related to Sniper but I wish I was because they’re a major fucking hottie. I have pale alabaster skin. I’m also a president, and I go to a palace called La Trimouille in France. I’m a noble (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly gold, ivory, or blue. I love the French aristocracy and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a silken waistcoat with matching lace around it and an ivory skirt, cobalt leggings and custom Humanist boots. I was wearing golden lipstick, white foundation, blue eyeliner and gold eye shadow. I was walking outside Romanova. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very unhappy about. A lot of Masons stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.

I honestly don't know. Slice of life manga and anime can be good without a dramatic plot, even if there is usually something that be called a goal or maybe even a conflict to give it a story it's of secondary importance. I just want to see the same attempted in western movies and maybe books.

am I the Pasta? Because I was rather not enjoying myself. If you got nothing else to do you might read Malazan, but the first Book is by far the best entry and it goes downhill fast from there.

I have not read the entire series, only the first 6 books, then gave the prequels a chance and read through the first and half of the second prequel book before finally giving up

its not horribly bad
but its not good either by any measure, and the allure of the worldbuilding done in the first book falls apart once you get to look into the heads of more important decision makers, with the entire Tiste conflict and the fracturing of their race being crazily stupid
