I read The Iliad, The Odyssey, Herodotus' Histories, Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Livy's History of the City of Rome from Its Foundation, Suetonius' Lives of the Twelve Caesars, Plutarch's Lives, The Bible, and The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire when I was 11-12 years old. I tried reading Plato's Republic back then , and even though I was very impressed by the philosopher-king concept, I wasn't really able to understand the most of the important concepts in it (like the rule of the soul, wisdom as the source of virtue, and eternal ideas) until I re-read it after going through the Pre-Socratics and Plato's other important dialogues at the age of 19 in my second semester of college.
I wouldn't really say I understood the Greeks all that well until I revisited them as a young adult. You don't really get to appreciate Homer, Euripides, or Plato until you've actually had at least a few painful and joyful life experiences.

I'm actually currently buying all the classics in my native language (german) so that my childen can read them before beeing able to be fluent in anglo speak, which I read them in because those copies usually are cheaper.

Already got all the greeks and romans as good hardcovers. Reading them at an early age is less about beeing able to understand everything and more about building the habit and learning to enjoy literature for the worlds they open. Meanwhile reading in school is made as nasty as possible, no wonder less and less kids care to read a book.

I'm currently at around 700 books, maybe 300 able to be understood my kids and young teenagers, and it's all growing so they will have enough to read even if the german goverment start tu cull lit for thought crimes. Sadly best I can do is send them of to a private school as home schooling is illegal in germany and I sure af will not send my kids to a nigger and arab infested publich school were elementary school kids get raped and stabbed with pocket knifes while having the educational level of a special ed school. I'm living rural and can pick actually good school with allow for matching private sublementation of education due to short hours. Going full redneck is neither possible nor logical. You would most likely get your child taken away if they figured out that it's not insured. It's also a crime to not register yourself or soebody else in your family with the city you live in. We have to by law have papers. I was homeschooled until 17 when I went to community college. I have a high IQ but that has nothing to do with how my mother taught me and my siblings.

A normal school day was my mother attempting to gather 4 children of different ages to sit and listen to a creationist version of history complete with dinosaurs missing the ark. Then she tried to get us to do school on the computer and we just played video games all day.

I never wrote a paper until my first year at college. I got good grades and made the Dean's list twice but I struggled socially for years, often choking up if I tried to talk to others or speak in front of class. I ran out of financial aid after dropping classes since I had no idea how to handle the work load from slacking off for all those years undisciplined.

I'm 30 now and have fully recovered socially, in fact I believe I would have excelled in public school if I had been put in young. I feel that I've been held back and I'm stuck in a horrible factory job for the last 7 years, when I know if I had a degree I'd be in a much better place.

In my opinion I'm very much against homeschooling, as my siblings are even worse off than me. Only if the parent is qualified and still has to put the children in social situations to prepare them for the shitty future.

I have two daughters.
The first one was homeschooled until around 8 year old and now goes to middle school, no problem.
The second one is 4 and used to go to the kindergarten but doesn't like her new school (we had to move) so we'll keep her with us until later.
My wife and me just inform them of our opinions and let them take the decision for themselve.
Both seem happy and creative, are fluent in two languages and proficient with computers.
We also started with the Greeks.
And the Chinese.

A lot of parents who homeschool their children move to bumfuck on purpose because they believe that human society is inherently corrupt and malign. Surprise, surprise. This leads to social and developmental delays, and usually outright child abuse of the kind beyond just homeschooling.
Only shitty, antisocial parents choose to do this with their children making homeschooling nearly universally taught by the unqualified and immensely harmful to children as a general practice. It should be illegal, and people who try to keep their kids from getting an actual education should have their kids taken away just like if they don't feed them or take them to the doctor.
