>tfw want to get into philosophy but afraid i might misread things and become a pseud
>especially afraid of reading Nietzsche and misunderstanding him
>can't even read the Greeks without truly understanding their historical and cultural significance

What's some good supportive literature/series to help someone like me?

Pic unrelated, it's just because OP's with cute women attract more replies.

WHY?! WHY MUST YOU TORMENT ME SO WITH THESE JEZEBELS? All I want to do is come here for an asexual experience that will exercise my brain but I am constantly titillated by these vixens with their prodigious hips and provocative figures. Can I never satiate this thirst, will I ever know the touch of a woman and enter between her loins? Will my seed ever drip from her moistened hole?

i think that is not really easy to answer without some more details about you. how old are you, how well-read are you in general, do you just want to dip in your toes or want to get really into it?

Hm. Normally my first tip for getting into this topic is "Sophie's World" by Jostein Gaarder, but that might be a little to superficial/light for you. (It is a great book nevertheless.) Maybe you could start with "A History of Western Philosophy" by Bertrand Russell. It is a great overview and covers all of the important western philosophers. It may be a good starting point, giving you "the basics".

Yeah, I don't think so. It may not be the most scientific piece of work on this planet, but it is readable, gives you a good overview includiding historical context. It is, in my opinion, a good starting point. And a lot of my university profs thought the same.

:D i will not comment on that.
But regardless, when you got someone who wants to get into philosophy with a broad interrest from the greeks to Nietzsche, isn't it best to start with a catalogue and say "look, what is interresting to you?" and giving overall context on the other hand. Wether you choose Russel or Anthony Kenny's "A New History Of Western Philosophy" (which may actually be the better choice).

I don't study philosophy but most of my closest friends do so here goes: Doesn't matter how much of a retard you are, you can never read anything wrong. The act of thinking about something is philosophy and whatever you say is just some new Idea you came up with. But don't be lazy you don't ever want to have someone tell you about a philosopher and you haven't read what they said etc. / plagiarize them without knowing.

>> No.11762901

>>11762728
Just acknowledge that what you glean from a first reading of a philosophy book will be very little, and most of that will likely be misinformed.

I say go ahead and read it. But then read 10 more books about the history of that time, what informed Nietzsche, criticism, etc. Then read it again.

Whew okay caffeine is wearing off, >>11762998
This argument is dependent on outruling time. To deny Nietzsche is different than finishing his argument. His final argument is not the path of enlightenment but the path of disillusionment and those are highly different. One is dependent on false idols and one on an embracement of some idealism, Nietzsche's hottake on the matter is that we must usurp our own principals, our culture's principals, and prinicipals in general to create our own system, which ends us back at Nietzsche himself, the proclamation of the idealism that cultural idealism is meaningless in nature, and confronts us with Nietzsche himself. Denying this is saying that there are idols and goods of cultural import, and is not necessarily predicated on Nietzsche but on abstracta irrelevant therefrom

"Looking at Philosophy" by Donald Palmer is less biased but yet easy to read, with nice little comics providing useful schematics or silly jokes that help you get concepts in an intuitive way.
It's expensive on print and the summaries of each author isn't too extensive, but it's used in a few Phil101 classes and a pdf of it is available on libgen.
I particularly enjoyed the chapter on scholasticism even tho I'm a filthy panatheist because medieval theologians had way more imagination than the fundamentalist opportunists of today.
