They're diagrams of the cosmos (not in the physical universe sense but in the reality-as-experience sense.)

The big shiny circle on the top of a lot of them is usually God or the Supreme Principle, and then everything else are different interpretations of how this principle manifests the rest of the universe (including things like the differences between masculine / feminine, how ignorance / suffering come to be, etc.)
