Thoughts?
I found it pretentious, although I believe Douglass' observations hold true to this day and age.

Sorry, I meant Fitzgerald's observations. I'm quite tired and have African American literature on my mind.

Best novel of the 20th century.

How the fuck is this pretentious?
I can understand why you wouldn't like it, but calling it pretentious is stupid. Especially coming from some tripfag with the tag "God-Emperor of /mu/, /tv/, and All Mankind."

I didn't post that one, sorry.

Fitzgerald took it upon himself to point out something everyone at the time knew: the American dream was dead. It didn't need to be said, he just said it to make himself look big.

>> No.1173983

I never really took the analogy for the american dream, because I could relate so well to what Gatsby was doing

Oh. You mean like every writer in history?

Not all of them. Some of them wrote to add to literature or to truly bring about change. Fitzgerald wrote to be pretentious.

Yeah, I came in with the piece being really hyped and came out disappointed.

The whole sequence of The old man killing Gatsby because his wife gets run over by a car struck me as outragous and a ridiculously crude and melodramatic way to have Gatsby die and be forgotten without having to convict any of the centeral characters of murder. I mean, at the very least there could have been development of a stronger relationship with this sideshow character if the author was serious about pulling that bullshit.

Additionally, I got irritated by the staple romance-and-potatoes plot, the economic decadence and disillusionment the author wanted to portray as a central theme felt pretty weak in my eyes compared to what could have been. But that's a personal preference really

They weren't great, they were two-dimensional stereotypes of 1920s Americans.

> Fitzgerald wrote to be pretentious.
so youre pretentious if you want to write a novel which pretty much symbolises the feelings of the time. hes a fucking writer he wanted to write about how he felt about the era, sure nowadays if you try at all to impose any sort of view on a topic when youre a writer, but i dont think they had that in mind when people were calling this the best american novel all those years ago. as for all you haters, sure thee are some things which arent perfect, but every novel is like that and it seems youre trying real hard to point something out to make it look like youre the more intelligent readers

It was well written, good prose, especially for an 85 year old novel.

yes, there is the allegory of gatsby wanting the american dream represented by daisy, but she is such a fucking cunt that i just thought the book was a waste of time. he was rich, he should of just got some whores.

>this day and age

You assume that our descendants will differentiate the time GG was written and our current time, a mere 90 years later. Think of it this way, compare/contrast the cultural changes of Roman society for the years (A.D.) 50 and 140.

Also, flapper era shit
