I have absolutely no idea of what the book is about myself, other than the faintest premise and that it's often praised. I'd love to dive right into it knowing little if nothing more.

I should be getting my copy sometime this week, if luck holds.

In the meantime, I'm writing again! Good pace, good start, plenty of enthusiasm and ideas, but it probably dies out before the first draft is complete. Maybe Gormenghast will help shape it further.

This book is atrociously bad. I cannot comprehend how it won an award. The real problem is that the awfulness of the book creeps up on you so you might feel compelled to finish it after you've invested some time into it.

Don't. I've never gone on here and straight up dumped on a book but this is horribly written it has awful prose and nonsensical characters and unless there's some subtle meta fuckery I didn't catch it is just beyond redemption.

As far as I'm concerned, likeable main characters are the very core of the story, what runs it and what keeps the reader turning the pages. We want to see what happens to them next, first and foremost, what they do and what challenges they face. Everything else is gravy.

I wrote my own book largely with this principle in mind. Maybe it would scratch your itch.

Why is Blindopraxia considered hard sci-fi? Particularly in the second book there's all sorts of handwaved nonsense like the entirety of how Portia is supposed to work and how being really smart apparently lets you remote-control tornadoes and reprogram people's brains with tongue clicks.

The way Theseus gets energy from the Icarus array doesn't make sense. Fabbers are inches away from being full blown Star Trek replicators with some lip service to make them seem plausible, and are used for the exact same purposes. The crucifix glitch doesn't make sense. The entire concept of sentience that is expounded upon strikes me as Watts' arbitrary definition that lets the rest of his premise work out. Basically the only thing in the books that I can see fairly considered as hard sci-fi is the biology not related to neurology (which makes sense since Watts' actual field is biology), which is precious little

Watts is clearly very fond of his vampires. If you read his blog, he even recently mentions that he's tried to get a book entirely about the fictional evolution of vampires before but all the publishers he's talked to tell him to fuck off. He has an incredibly long slideshow about the discovery of vampires up in his website, framed as an actual in-universe FizerPharm conference. Even if you don't know his website, the paragraph upon paragraph of infodumping about vampires in Blindsight should be enough. I don't get why Watts is irking you for his spin on the consciousness while Greg Egan (taking his Permutation City for an example) is based on something as fanciful as a universal computer simulation and the premise that the consciousness is Turing complete. Not to mention the techonomagical "cloud computing" which ignores latency and coherency problems (something that Freeze Frame Revolution does not).
Andy Weir (and I did like The Martian) and Clark deal with areas that we know much more about but even then they are forced to take some liberties. The Martian never mentioned how were the astronauts able to avoid the effects of prolonged space flight on their musculoskeletal system, Clark never explained how the Monolith influenced the hominids (while I am harping about consciousness), the list goes on.
The Theseus is a product of an accelerated research and development program by a bunch of idiot-savant AI's who are so far out there their findings have to be "flattened" by specially trained freaks to be usable. If the tech is almost magical, you gotta admit the reason is pretty cool.
The rest of the mind fuckery (both figurative and literal) in Blindopraxia is grounded in scientific findings, as there are quite a lot of "let's see what happens when we expose the brain to ultrasound, infrasound, powerful magnetic fields and good ol' chemical compounds that pass the blood brain barrier" studies. What irked me about Watts' take on sentience is not that it was wrong or unrealistic whether it actually was those things or not, it's that it was circular. Like, by any definition used by people other than Watts Rorschach is sentient, if alien and superhumanly intelligent. That already tears down most of the book's premise. You could make the argument that the *Scramblers* aren't, at most.

I had no fucking idea what was going on with the zombies. I get that they're a reference to the concept of p-zombies, but the way I understood them their brains and nervous system are augmented to skip conscious thought while the switch is on. And then Bruks finds out they can talk and answer questions about themselves. That fits with actual p-zombies, but how does it work with the actual zombies in the book?

You got it all wrong. The Scramblers are intelligent but not conscious. They have no awareness of self, no identity. This is one of the main themes of the novels. And Rorschach is just a vessel, crewed by Scramblers. The difference here is that Rorschach's life support systems are rather different.

>>11746277
I think it's again a case of intelligence without consciousness. They are intelligent, they can talk and reason and they are not just a bundle of murderous reflexes. But the consciousness is in some far away place. That's actually a selling point.

Have you actually read the book? About the evolution of a nightly (hence pale) predatory (hence the wolf teeth) subspecies (cannibalism being a pretty standard ecological interaction) with low density target population (hence hibernation) and bad wiring up there in the noggin (so that they can't watch Pokemon intros or they would start foaming at the mouth). Again, by any definition not penned by Watts, someone in the relationship between the Scramblers and Rorschach has to be sentient. Maybe they don't have identity or consciousness in the way we do, but at worst you can say that it acts EXACTLY as if it was self-aware and intelligent, but somehow isn't. It's definitely capable of analyzing, precisely emulating and altering subjective experience (as shown by its constant tampering of the crew's brains and Portia). The difference between that and actual "understanding" is semantics.

Further, the Chinese Room argument which he repeatedly brings up in Blindsight was originally a thought experiment about AI. The setting has hard AI, and the debate of their sentience is still ongoing in-universe. The fucking protagonist calls himself a Chinese Room, and he's definitely sentient. Rorschach is at least as sentient as a hard AI and maybe slightly less so than Siri Keeton, or Sarasti, for that matter (if we assume that he is still a "real" vampire in some level and not just a puppet to the Captain). Even if Rorschach, the Scramblers as a group or individual Scramblers are not capable of subjective experience, all indicates to the system they compose being capable of it.

I flicked on the heat bars and the Bryllis ran swiftly on five legs using their other two to send out crylon vibrations. The pressure was almost unbearable, but I caught the range on my wrist computer through the transparent cysicites. I pressed the trigger. The thin violet glow was ice-cold against the rust-colored mountains. The Bryllis shrank to half an inch long and I worked fast stepping on them with the poltex. But it wasn't enough. It's not semantics. Is it so hard to accept that an alien species can act intelligently while not being self-aware? That even without an ego, intelligence can act in order to satisfy it's needs and solve practical problems. Everything related to the Chinese Room is the consequence of them not being self aware. They are more than intelligent enough to break down the functioning of a language of a conscious species (aka us) but they do not understand it as semantics is completely beyond them.
The premise of Scramblers is that without all that consciousness cruft, they are far more intelligent. That indeed consciousness is a costly computational aberration compared to more focused and efficient non-sentient species. It's dark and pessimistic in that patented Watts manner.

Any chance one of you could help me remember the title of this novel series?

The premise is that a small team of people is chosen to be copied into machine bodies, and identical versions of the team sent on numerous slower than light ships to investigate nearby stars. The book follows one team member, and the world his ship arrives on is visited by silent but benevolent aliens who construct several towers, each containing a gift, including a transparent spacesuit and a small faster than light ship. Shortly after, the entire planet is destroyed by starfish-shaped alien ships. Protagonist barely escapes in the tiny ship and heads for earth.

At earth he finds humanity has turned most of the solar system into a megastructure and most people exist as hive minds of many copies of their individual bodies. After making contact with one of the bodies belonging to the original of one of his team members, he learns he is the only copy of his original that didn't go insane and die.

It's revealed the starfish ships are following the benevolent aliens and destroying any civilization they contact, which now includes earth thanks to the protagonist's ship. The protagonist and his team mate's original barely escape the destruction of the solar system in the FTL ship and embark on a quest to find out who the starfish ships are and why they do what they do.

I don't think so. So far, he's just background noise. He could become more alien by actually showing contrast with the crew, not by fading on the background. I am not even talking about adding him as a POV, but maybe Chur, that's with him all the time. Or Hilfy, the apprentice.

I will go on to read Xanth right now, and maybe I'll get back to this later.

You won't get that in the first book. IIRC there's single scene from Haral's POV that takes place away from Pyanfar. In the trilogy that follows you get Hilfy POV and some Tully relationship exploration, but I don't know if it would be enough for you. I think you'd enjoy Chanur's Legacy more, and you don't technically need to read the others for it, though I'd be sad for you.

I don't think so? Cherryh taught Latin and some of her stuff can be kinda dense, though she's no prose lyricist like Vance. The Pride of Chanur is one of her more accessible works.

Snow Crash is good because cyberpunk is a terrible genre.

>you just throw dinosaurs
Books with dinosaurs? I tried reading the The Many Colored Land, but aside from being at the wrong epoch, there was a stupid rule that every female would have to be sterile. Talk about lame, didn't actually get past that.

Alternatively, any giant animals will do.

Again: Rorschach acts exactly as if it was self-aware and fits most definitions of sentience. Everything else, like "consciousness being a costly computational aberration compared to more focused and efficient non-sentient species" only holds water if you accept the likely incorrect premise that Rorschach isn't sentient in the first place when you do not define sentience in the specific way Peter Watts does.

To be clear, not saying that Rorschach and the Scramblers weren't good. I'd still easily recommend the series if people asked me for good sci-fi horror or for books with really "alien" life.

Still, it's easy to think otherwise given the themes in Blindopraxia, but Watts has no qualifications in neurology, psychology or psychiatry . His PhD is in marine biology. There is literally no reason to take his ideas so seriously, interesting as they may be to ponder

Well, true, but with the slarn enhancements its acceptable. Also there's the scene with the female soldier getting her shit kicked in by two male soldiers.

Then there's the specialty roles like controlling the bird, demolitions, and sniping. All within the realm of possibility.

felt the same way before I bought it(was on sale and figured what the Hell)

next thing I know I really like it, think because it's played totally straight so it comes off as a standard fantasy world. Also gives me a shit ton of old school Everquest vibes and that hits me squarely in the nostalgia

I don't get what you mean by it. Are you saying that it doesn't have game elements, or that the book takes the game elements in it very seriously and not as a parody? Because the second option sucks ass and the first isn't really litrpg.

>there was a stupid rule that every female would have to be sterile
Looking back now, that rule is even stupider than I realized at first. Its reason is supposed to be so that the females that did go back in time were not treated like animals and pleasure slaves, but that is dumb because females don't need to be able to produce offspring to be treated as such in the first place.

>> No.11749223

>>11749115
Maybe it's so that said females wouldn't end up producing offspring and starting a whole new lineage in the past, which could well fuck up the timeline on a grand scheme of things?

Although that'd still raise a question on how men are allowed to just go and fuck a bunch of women in the past...

>> No.11749373

>>11749223
Nah, they weren't worried about the past fucking up the present at all. I think it's just the author's way of protecting his ass from fridge logic.

I think what he tried to say is that the author went "I want vampires, let me jump through hoops to justify my image of them" rather than "what if there was a subspecies thriving on blood, let me explore the possible consequences".

I haven't read the book though.
