Kindle Wi-Fi or Kindle 3G?

Basically I'd be paying a one time $50 fee for net access anywhere, that sounds good to me.

I probably couldn't do anything useful on it though, such as google maps when I'm stuck somewhere. Mostly just basic browsing or buying more books.. Which I probably won't do - I hope pdf support is good ;)

E-reader general discussion I guess. I mostly want to hear peoples experiences with using an e-reader in any social setting "YOU BOUGHT ONE OF THOSE ELECTRONIC BOOKS? YOU SOME KINDA RETARD" etc

I guess I was looking for opinions and discussion from /lit/ users themselves, specifically whether they thought the 3G was worth $50.

Also, this board being anonymous, people have little inhibition as far as discussing piracy and pirated books.

Eh, the only think allowing me to consider buying an e-reader is the e-ink display. I don't think I could stand staring at an LCD for so long, especially such a small one.

I'm not sure what 100 pounds is exactly, but Amazon lists the psp at $169, which is $30 more than the kindle wi-fi.

Do you have it modded to play game backups? Or do you just read books on it? If I could mod it to play games, it might be worth considering.

You won't need whispernet, ever.

Get the wifi version.

Seriously, unless it's operating systems or graphics cards or desktop threads, they won't know what to do.

OP: Kindles are pretty good, and you will probably not be disappointed. I hate their lack of .epub support.

I use a Sony PRS-505, which is great if you don't want features like touchscreens or wifi or keyboards, which I don't, but some people do. If you want those features, I'd suggest a kindle.

Also, get Calibre. And here's some free ebooks. http://www.nautilus-solar.net/SandyGunfox/books/

Truth.

If you do wait until next year to MAYBE get a color version, it's going to cost an arm and a leg. I don't need color. None of my actual books have color.

3g is handy, but if you are around a place that always has wifi, then wifi only is the way to go. I travel a lot and I use 3g internet in my car.

Calibre makes converting epub into mobi super easy, and the results are really good. So I wouldn't count no epub support as a downside, just kinda silly. Like the Nook has no txt support. Fucking weird.

I got the latest version of the Kindle with free nationwide 3G because I like the comfort of knowing I can look up not only words (all Kindles come with a built-in dictionary that operates independently of the internet) but also concepts that I may be unfamiliar with, through Wikipedia. If you think you'll be doing this frequently, or if the kind of material you'll be reading requires frequent Wikipedia-checking, then I'd recommend that you do this as it's only 50$ for free 3G everywhere.

Otherwise, Wi-Fi should be fine. As for the native .pdf support - it's not too shabby, depending on the .pdf that you're loading, but I usually have to read mine with extremely small font. Also, I have to position the screen sideways and tilt my Kindle horizontally. You see, you can't just raise/lower the font size like you would with text files; you have to zoom in/out, and if you zoom in AT ALL, part of the page gets cut off. So you have to read everything at the farthest zoom, which is all right for me because I'm naturally near-sighted, but older readers with bad eyes may find it terribly bothersome.

Either way, good luck with your purchase. I snagged one after I got in on the 3700+ eBook archive that one anon uploaded on mediafire, and I've been reading shit on my Kindle for free ever since I got it. I'd recommend that you get Calibre in case you need to do any file conversions as Calibre's text formatting is superior to anything else I've used. It converts .pdf files into .txt files really, really well.

Spring for the 3D unless you're just desperately poor.

Actually, even if you're desperately poor, because then you'll still have internets when they shut yours off.

My Kindle's 3D saved my life. I crashed my car on an old gravel road off the highway. I was alone and my cell phone was dead. I was trapped. The car could've caught on fire, or I could've just starved to death or god knows what else. Luckily, I had my Kindle. I used it to email my friend, who called an ambulance for me.

Actually, that's all a lie. BUT IT *COULD* HAPPEN!

...Even to YOU!

For god's sake, get the 3G!

It seems that for properly-formatted e-books on the Kindle without having to adjust and re-adjust everything in Calibre, we're stuck with buying shit aside from the rare .azw that can be found online...

Live in america?
3G
Outside of america?
Skip the kindle all together. no epub support, and the 3G is hilariously crippled(Only lets your browse the amazon store.... and than adds 2$ to each book to subsidies the 'free' 3G access for everyone to the store)

I live in Canada, and am probably going to wait for the sony PRS-650. Touchscreen(new tech. No weird film over the screen) supports pretty much EVERYTHING, dictionary, etc.. no wifi or 3G, but i would never use it anyway.

Also, comparing a non-eink screen device to an ereader = retarded. ereaders should be unitaskers, since eink isnt really good for anything other than static text, and LCD/AMOLED/Whatever sucks at displaying text if you want to read off it for more than 1 hour.

There's no ereader for the PSP, that readers EPUB... infact i'm pretty sure it can only read plain txt files and pdfs.

Also, you pretty much need to have CFW to read anything off it.
