Other than his poor pacing, can we admit that Abercrombie is actually a good author? Im rereading the blade itself for the first time in a few years, and while it's taking a while to get going, I find that the characters are engaging enough to carry that. Especially glokta, and also bayaz once you know his actual deal. The world and history are well fleshed out, climatic sequences are well executed, and the dialogue is better than what you get in most grimdark, without going way over the top like Edgelord Lawrence.

One of the guys in the cover is basically a tourist that likes to try everything... while the other guy tends to be leery about food he doesn't recognize and has to be persuaded to eat anything foreign. I don't think there was any feasts, but they do get to eat a bunch.

There's
>sausage, chicken, fresh bread, weird pudding, lasagna, bunch of alcohol and tes
>emergency food mould-porridge
>fish soup and octopus that squirms around when you pour the sauce on it
>corn tortillas, guinea pig, sacred blood biscuits
>SOULS! (I guess it counts)
>slimy mush (birdmen can't chew: their drinks are fine though)
>spicy bread, dates, sugar
>unpalatable mushy alien rations
>mashed potatoes, meatballs, fish
>the main character himself, about twice
and
>more sacred blood biscuits, only this time spiked with acid and fed to like two thousand mutant warriors at once
>oh, and I guess some of those mutant warriors may have subsequently eaten one another, but I didn't put any of this in the text, kind of a missed opportunity I realize

They breed like shadowy, scaredy-cat nightmare creatures in a vaguely rabbit-like physical appearance: find someone that would cast a different enough shadow from you if they ever dared to step into light, take him or her to a nice comfy pitch-black place somewhere underground, and get absolutely silent while doing it. Any noise or illumination can attract predators. Shadows are souls and shouldn't be let outside bodies. Difference is beauty.

You know how really old buildings sometimes make weird noises, bumps and creaks and what have you, and you might see movement in the corner of your eye, or wake up in the morning with this hazy dreamlike state where you think something might be looking at you? If all of that ever stops, there's a fair chance that the creatures responsible for it are fucking.

No human has ever seen it, probably. ...Until in one of the sequels, because I'm a degenerate.

>however, the portal doesn't open on their world, but on a shifting mass of tendrils
>the servant didn't want to bring the great evil into their world, it wanted to bring it into this one
>a tendril reaches out an seizes the MC's wrist
>another portal snaps open in front of the first one and severs his hand at the forearm
>a third opens under the feet of MC#2
>MC#3 tries to catch #2 but a portal opens in fron to him as he moves and he tumbles through.

This is the worst plotting I have read, ever. Makes JK Rowling look competent. And this is all happening in the first third of the Gardens of the Moon. What gives, how did it become so popular? >no map

>copy/paste job of indeterminate pre-modern European culture
>no sense of time or distance because narrative jumps arbitrarily between locations and events with no real rhythm
>kingdoms and empires consist of one or two cities surrounded by "countryside" which are devoid of life except for roving armies and occasional bandits capable of moving at warp speed
>majority of all scenes occur within a palace or citadel of some kind, we learn about most events via "reports" (bald faced exposition recited from a character)
>when you finally get a scene that's not in a city you can bet it's going to involve complaining about weather and/or fighting whatever enemies spawn in that area (bandits, Eaters, Northmen, shanka, whatever)
>so much of the series is focused on war yet the author apparently knows fuck all about military history from any era, the military organization of the Union makes no sense and is a random mishmash of different concepts from different eras like he couldn't be bothered to think up something logical
Joe Abercrombie's book series reads like a novelization of a TV show ripping off Game of Thrones. It basically takes every bad thing from the HBO adaptation of Martin's books and then writes a book series based on them. What utter tripe.

I've asked this before, and someone recommended the genre wuxia / xianxia, but after looking at those types of stories, it's not exactly what I mean. Also forgive the dumb anime and capeshit references, but these are some of the only examples I can find.

I'm looking for stories that involve someone trying to change the nature of reality. For example: Full metal alchemist brotherhood, where the homunculus is trying to become a god, Neon Genesis Evangelion with seele and the human instrumentality project. More recently, Thanos assembling the infinity gauntlet in Infinity War. Somewhat related, with similar feelings: Cults in Lovecraft stories trying to summon outer gods. Vincent in "The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August" building the "quantum mirror". Also the fanfic HPMoR.

I haven't combed through the tvtropes pages for those works, and maybe I'm missing something obvious. Is https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TakeOverTheWorld the closest to what I'm getting at?

Okay, but his first complaint is still completely valid. That's the most boring kind of magic imaginable.

>> No.11727091

Malazan has some of the most diverse magic you will ever seen in a fantasy series. All kinds of crazy shit. Trapping souls in voodoo dolls, shape shifting into swarms of animals, entire races turning themselves into indestructible undead armies, gravity bombs that doom entire realities to oblivion, plagues of madness that turn people into cannibals, summoning demons from other planes of reality, illusions and mental manipulation. And yes, big fuck off beams and waves of pure energy.

The magic in Malazan isn't rigidly laid out like in Sanderson, but there's logic to it. Or rather several logics. It's not really clear how it all fits together at first but that's Malazan in general. It's impossible to see the big picture because it's so much bigger than the events of the first book, or even the first few books. Erickson never really sits you down and explains things, you just gradually accrue more knowledge and if you pay attention you start to see the shape of things.

Oh you're that one guy who just shitposts about D&D whenever Malazan comes up. D&D's magic is based on the writings of Jack Vance, particularly Dying Earth. Malazan's magic does not resemble it in the least. In fact, Malazan's magic system would probably be impossible to transcribe to a role playing setting because of how chaotic and loosely defined its power sets are.

I'd like to put out a warning;
sometimes Malazan, Book of the Fallen will be shilled by some dudes, but the truth is, it just straight up sucks after the very first book ( Gardens of the Moon ) and degenerates into ever more splintering plotthreads with less and less and less relevance to anything, culminating in the prequel books Forge of Darkness and Fall of Light - wherein the first book has basically nothing happening and the second just expands on secondary and tertiary characters from the first; meanwhile failing to retrospectively craft any kind of interesting narrative concerning the civil war and its causes;

its even worse than the original books, because in the original books scope is usually ground-level footsoldiers for most practical purposes, divorced from the absurdity of imperial administration and politics, while the prequels delve DEEPLY into the people making actual decisions - and all of them are irrationally stupid and retarded

do not waste your time reading those 10+ books.

anyone know what happened to Micheal-Scott Earle? from what ive gathered shit like this went down:
>increadibly successful to the point where he makes about 200k a month from kindle unlimited alone
>turns out hes been fooling the KU system so his books have way higher pagecount than in reality
>get kicked off kindle and all that remains are his audiobooks
>after contacting amazon they tell him you can come back on but no more shenanigans and you need to have a publisher
>he proceeds to create a publisher and gets on for like 2 days before being kicked out again
>no more news on anything

theres also this bit about where he is associated with the chick from cockygate and he also tried to copyright generic fantasy guy posing with weapon on his covers.

beyond that theres nothing new. does anyone know whats currently happening?
i mean its good that he got burned for padding out his book and possible hiring clickfarms for CU(pure speculation since the people he knows are known for this). but i really wanna know how tamer continues and the destroyer kinda grew on me.

all this stuff was completely news to me and only afterwards have i found out that the ebooks on pirate sites are completely differently formated than the ku and amazon ebooks. i dont take his books too seriously i mean they arent anything special just fun little romps that you read in between something more professional. but its sad to see him gone. will a publisher even take a chance on him? i mean he had a huge fucking fanbase to begin with and was featured as NYT bestselling author multiple times. but i mean look at what he tried to copyright.

Hehehe, I wasn't aware of that one, but I know he also tried to trademark "Dragon Slayer", which is silly, since at least 50% of fantasy features a dragon slayer or another and there's many, many other books with this same title.

In a thread two weeks ago I shared some thoughts on the farseer trilogy and was persuaded to move on to liveship traders. I'm about halfway through the final book. I liked them as much or more than the first trilogy. For me I found the farseer trilogy was less interesting with each book but I was invested enough in the characters to want to finish. With liveship I feel like the books each cover new ground and even if Hobb still can't quite do subtle foreshadowing at least it's not as bad as farseer where she literally reused the same chapter intro topics 50x. I made the mistake of reading a spoiler which revealed a fairly minor point plot which I wish I'd been left to discover on my own. The books are very tangentially in the same world, so you won't be seeing lots of familiar names or places. The setting is quite fun, pirates and sailing and whatnot. The family politics are more interesting and dynamic then in farseer and people also evolve into new roles which makes the character development feel better. There's still a 'regal' figure of an incompetently evil family member always causing harm.

Sorry for the scattered thoughts, I wasn't planning on posting until I finished the trilogy. I don't feel qualified to say if it was 'good' but I thought it was fun and as someone who read it because I also enjoyed farseer I'd recommend you check it out. The books go by pretty quick and if you're not a fan you don't need to finish the trilogy

>> No.11731598

I guess one other thing that might be important to you. I really only like one of the characters. I find most of them annoying. In the first book I liked the wolf and the fool and the old assassin. I know some people prefer books where they could see the characters as friends or at least not see them as dicks. Don't get me wrong I'm enjoying the trilogy but it's not like a game of thrones where when she shifts to a new perspective I'm really excited to see how my favorite character is doing.

Also she does a lot more shifted narration and multiple viewpoints in this trilogy than she does in farseer. I don't have a strong opinion on it but it's something you might want to be aware of.

Solid 'effin gold. Some aliens ply the space in style.
From the book:
"Then he forgot the derelict, for something was coming up over the horizon.
At first it looked like a flat disk, but that was because it was heading almost directly toward him. As it
approached and passed beneath, he saw that it was spindle-shaped, and several hundred feet
long. Though there were faintly visible bands here and there along its length, it was hard to focus
upon them; the object appeared to be vibrating, or perhaps spinning, at a very rapid rate.
It tapered to a point at either end, and there was no sign of propulsion. Only one thing about it was
familiar to human eyes, and that was its color. If it was indeed a solid artifact, and not an optical
phantom, then its makers perhaps shared some of the emotions of men.
But they certainly did not share their limitations, for the spindle appeared to be made of gold."
