The point is that all the metrics these people fixate on is ancillary to a happy human life. There's no real attempt to wrestle with why people might be justifiably unhappier, and the technocrats are content to chock that unhappiness up to irrational catastrophizing. So, given their assumption that it's some irrational reflex lacking in perspective, they attempt to handwave it away by presenting GDP graphs, real wage graphs, crime statistics, etc.

Point is, it never attempts to wrestle with why people may actually be unhappy in a meaningful way.

To highlight my point, one could imagine a situation where all these metrics are improved to their absolute limit: all human beings live in isolated cages connected to sophisticated medical equipment, all productivity is handled by machines. There is no crime, lifespans are long, humans have all their material wants satisfied, but one could only imagine the actual misery that such a society would embody, a misery that would make foraging in the wild for game look like a preferable life.

I don't mean to say that our society is that absurd depiction, but that the fixations of these apologists for the status quo are inadequate to understand what really ails people.

That's an unreasonable dichotomy. While fascists may pine for gaining meaning in life through violence and a stripping away of civilized life, that is not my point. My point, fundamentally, is that bringing up these metrics is a non sequitur, that there are ways we could be happier. It's not that there must be a tradeoff.

That being said, let's say there is a tradeoff. I would choose a happy and short life over a long and miserable one, no question. I think most people would agree, especially at the extremes.

This is very true, with control over economic policies shifting into the hands of private business, the rise of state capitalism, populism, transnational corporations/trade agreements, IFOs and all. Globally, democracy had been on the way out since the 80's. The rise of liberal democracy was a boom-bust hockey stick kind of trend, like our fisheries, now it's clear democracy is on the way out and capitalism isn't going anywhere. It gets worse every day just like pretty much everything else.

There's no question that they're sometimes good. The American revolution brought a lot of good. So did the Reconquista.
>more wealth = lower birth rates. the more of Africa that is lifted out of poverty, the lower the birth rates of blacks will be. you should be happy
Yes this is the line fed to conservative boomers over and over and over again to make them ok with sending mass amounts of aid to Africa. But it didn't work. Their birth rates are still gigantic and at this point there's no way it's ever dropping below 2 kids per woman.
>again, learn some history. democracy is miles better than any other system ever tried
A very popular opinion that is never defended with proof.
>it has been massively declining
It's being swept under the rug.
>harsher punishments DO NOT correspond to lower crime rates. you are simply wrong
There's a difference between correlation and causation. In this case there is proven causation (it's in the academic literature for criminologists) but the correlation isn't as pronounced because areas with bad crime tend to increase legal punishments to try and reduce the crime, therefore creating a correlation between high crime and high punishments. However the causal link of harsher punishments resulting is in less crime has been well established and articulated. Not to mention it being incredibly obvious from a logical standpoint.

Sorry snowflake, neocons are clearly right wing, not even moderate by any sane standard.
>with sending mass amounts of aid to Africa.
You have no idea how foreign aid works and where that money goes. Population booms in Africa are mainly caused by privatization and subsequent trade(with many other conditions such as resources and infastructure)these are enginereed mostly by state power, IFOs, and transnationals, with the actual agency of the population being manipulated and repressed. Most aid has gone to guns or warlords, with the actual humanitarian aid being used to control the messes that makes.

Eliot was more British than American, and in fact he spent his life in England rather than in the US. Pound was by evicted by his own country and decided to live the rest of his days in London, Paris and Italy. Nothing you should be proud of.

I'm not saying America has no culture, you pathetic nationalist crybaby. American novels are great. But believing the American 20th century was better than others is simply retarded. The countries I've mentioned in the previous post are undoubtedly on par when it comes to poetry. And... yes, they also have a few novels not far from Moby Dick for quality.

Rape increases testosterone to normal historic levels and makes your body able to become ripped as fuck. Weight lifting is 4000% more effective in general, and things like gyno disappear completely and you become progressively more statuesque. Most men looked like that for most of history

You only need 2-3 rapes under your belt (lifetime number) to get up to normal levels. Historically most men achieved that number by age 20 and then became family men.

Now THAT is bluepilled as fuck. Top 1 richest family has more than the rest of the planet combined, because in the era of FIAT money central bankers have infinite wealth. There is no comparison between infinity and real numbers.

>Dostoevesky

Lel. Doestoeveskeye.

Good to see Stendhal on there, unexpected. I suppose Jordan got a boner for him after reading Nietzsche laud him. No harm in that, it just explains why it seems like the odd one out in a list of mostly mediocre Americans. His taste in philosophical works, of course, is beyond horrible, which is unsurprising, as he is incapable of reading philosophy (his appropriation of Being from Heidegger being perhaps the most cringey example. His use of Rousseau is likewise something you should fail an undergrad in an introductory course for).

But yeah, everyone should read Stendhal. It's sort of a Flaubert meets Dumas, very worthwhile.

You've got a point, honestly.

But you're somewhat playing ignorant to the difficulties of pre-modern life. A days work 200 years ago on your average farm would literally kill a modern person. Even 100 years ago, children were routinely used as industrial tools in the West. We have come a long way, as a culture, the West, in truly slaying these inner demons which compelled us to create so much suffering.

You're making a straw man out of the other position though. Pinker and others do address human flourishing in the context of social relationships and having a sense of purpose. The graphs are to show that something's are objectively improving to stop the catastophizing of civilization is about to collapse because recent economic shifts have cause a lot of the lower class great misfortune.

i think there are a few important things to point out here:
>these graphs are incapable of pitching the full story
>they rarely assuage the real doubts and fears people have (who cares about GDP growth if it's all going to the upper class?)
>macroscopic to a fault
>comes off as resting on your laurels (look, everything's going up, so we just have to sit back and follow our trajectory!)
>usually don't include our most dangerous trends or don't contextualize the trends properly (sure, we have more green energy now than ever before, but is it good enough with even the most optimistic growth patterns? probably not)
