Take the time in the first few weeks to train him right and you will get on fine. You can use a crate, it's actually beneficial. And rather than long walks any sort of training that works their brain will tire them out even more.
You should be able to write nearly the same amount once he is established. Don't take him back.

I think book 1 is the heaviest, most depressing book I've ever read. But they're both real, mundane and beautiful. Give it a shot. Also read Winter and really liked it.
