That's a bad idea: Dante poured all of his scientific and umanistic knowledge in his magnus opus, so unless you're as knowledgeable in medieval science, Italian history, and classical literature as he was (which is unlikely) a lot of things are going to leave you scratching your head. Google is going to help you identifying notable characters at most, but even then many of them are not called with their name, the reader is just expected to realise who they are.

It helps to know Greek and Roman mythology, orators, poets and philosophers because he meets a lot of them and they speak about their pasts in the form of how they wrote or spoke in their work.

There's some very obscure references though so don't be disheartened if you don't recognise everyone there. Honestly, it's a fun ride throughout the Divine Comedy with some great interactions, advice and personal insight that you'll probably enjoy it without knowing everyone he meets.
