Why should I care, or have any types of empathy for people outside of my family and friends?

I just read "The Ethics of Care and Empathy".

If you don't care about anyone but your family and friends, then why should anyone outside that group care about you? Then how will you avoid being robbed or killed by some other dickweed like yourself, and why should you be allowed to cry if that ever happens?

If you have to ask why then you'll never know. Empathy is not something one chooses to have.

Any other good books similar to that one?

All these people will die or abandon you over the years.

that's no reason not to care about them. maybe if you cared people wouldn't abandon you.

You shouldn't. Understand that human value, contrary to what almost everyone these days believe (funnily enough), has only declined as our numbers have increased. Value is based on the rarity and/or the usefulness of the thing. Human life is overly abundant for this planet and most people are completely useless, to nature most importantly but also to you. So therefore it can be concluded that caring at all for someone that is not very close to you is a mistake. Empathy for human life in general is something that was useful back when human life had some value, when most people you met actually were worth caring for.
