It's not even that, though. Either god doesn't exist or even if he does, as he is described in the cults which have historically obtained, then he is undeserving of worship. Nor is it any sort of a defense to say, "oh but you have to no matter what anyway b/c otherwise you'll go to hell lmao". The point is that it is still necessary to reject god even and espcially in the case that he actually is, and is as described-which is to say, an asshole. That this might be impossible for a rational actor, if one has hell-avoidance first and foremost, does not obviate its moral necessity.

People really interpret Pascal on this one.. and also the historical context from which he wrote, both in a general sense of being able to envision a God other than the Platonic infinite and infinitely good, and from his particular Jansenist context and what the Pensees actually were. Pascal's point and his argument are both a lot more complex than the vulgar version passed down like a game of telephone.
