"Quartering the topmost branches of one of the tall trees, an invisible bird was striving to make the day seem shorter, exploring with a long-drawn note the solitude that pressed it on every side, but it received at once so unanimous an answer, so powerful a repercussion of silence and of immobility, that one felt it had arrested for all eternity the moment which it had been trying to make pass more quickly."

If you can't get on board with writing like that, then I don't know what the fuck is wrong with you.

The bird was singing to fill the silence and make the solitude and sadndss pass more quickly, but the silence it received in response only crushed its spirit even further and made the solitude seem even deeper. It would've been better to not have sung at all, and to just let the solitude do its thing.

At first, Proust is difficult to read because he builds very long sentences in which the main idea desviates towards secondary subjects, and after a very long explanation of this secondary element, the sentence suddenly returns to the main idea. You have to pay special attention to the commas but once you are familiar with Proust's writing, you will start to read faster and apreciate the beauty of his prose. I love the first part of Swann's way, where the narrator is basically ejaculating at the sight of steeples, multicolored flowers, stained glass. Literature at its finest.

it is actually very clear, you might have a bad translation. The French is not at all hard to understand and I am not even native French

God, I fucking hate so much this kind of turgid prose. "A bird sang". There. That's all he needed to write. What a massive fucking paper-wasting faggot.

The use of 'quartering' here is a bit weird, since normally I'd expect to hear someone/thing quartering IN a location. Given that it's Moncrieff the use probably has a precursor, but it's still odd.

4/10 got some replies, but still far too obvious.
