Just recently finished reading through most of the Conan stories. I watched the movie when I was a kid and all but aside from that I really never gave much thought to the source material and fuck did I miss out. It's campy as fuck but I loved most of the stories. Some of the ones that weren't written by Howard were a bit meh though.

Nothing kills my desire to write more than finding out a novel already exists with extremely similar ideas and theme. Past year I wrote a handful of short stories based in ideas I had. Spent two months adapting them into a full length story and pretty happy win the direction it's going.

The last night I was looking for something new to read and found a book trilogy I've never heard of which is eerily similar to my idea. I'm too afraid to read it out of fear that I'll subconsciously steal ideas from it.

Anyone else read House of Shattered Wings? I picked a book in a hurry at the library last week and found it really unusual as a fantasy book. I enjoyed the shit out of it.

Lafferty is the fucking goddamn man, I love him to death, he's my favorite writer.

OTOH, he's an almost impenetrably weird writer at times. His style isn't actually comparable to Wolfe's at all (imo) except insofar as they both have similar concerns with Catholicism and both are often difficult to penetrate. A better comparison is maybe Flann O'Brian but even that is tricky. In terms of popularity, I think he suffers from the fact that, one, his books are extremely hard to get a hold of. Two, there are very few good comparable writers - it's hard to say "if you like writer X, you'll definitely like Lafferty". Three, his work is weird and not really suited to mass popularity - his plots meander and wander around and approach things from odd angles and never settle comfortably into any recognizable mold. And four, his fanbase has a substantial portion of Catholicness, which is often limiting in terms of recruiting new readers.

He is an absolute goddamn genius, though, and I recommend him in the strongest possible terms to anyone. I would say start with Reefs Of Earth, Fourth Mansions, or any of the short story collections you can get your hands on.

Lander was a damn wingnut. She is the poster girl for BPD f2f who ruins your life. Egwene is a bitch, but she gets better when she starts making the other women in the story miserable. Nynaeve is the most tsundere character outside of anime ever. She is super awkward and used to dealing with old peoe who don't respect her, so she is super pushy in the beginning. She is also probably the bravest character in the whole series, even though she thinks that feeling fear makes her a coward. Second most tsundere is Aviendha. She is actually useful and pretty level headed for the most part. Min is the best girl in the whole book. She has a great personality, useful powers, and just wants to screw Rand's brains out. Most of the other women are varying levels of bitchiness, with Cadsuane and Elayne duking it out for Queen Cunt. Holy cheap did I want Elayne to meet a first death full of humiliation.
