Can someone recommend several good science fiction and fantasy series to me? I recently went to a bookstore and saw many that looked interesting, but I had no idea where to start. I'm the kind of person that has to read a series from beginning to end, regardless of length. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I've read the first Dune, though I've slowly been acquiring the rest of the series. I've heard of Hyperion Cantos and it seems interesting. I hear it's soft sci-fi, which is fine with me (hard sci-fi tends to be a bit dry to me anyway).

I read Ender's Game years ago and loved it, still have the original copy. I just can't seem to understand the chronology of the series. I remember seeing a web of it a while back, but I never saved it.

If you like Star Wars, the X-Wing series and the Thrawn trilogy are highly regarded as not being typical EU silliness. If not, there's plenty of sci-fi classics and I'm pretty sure there's a /lit/ sci-fi guide around somewhere.

Ah thank you so much! I lost my original copies of LotR and have yet to replace them. I've been meaning to get into A Song of Ice and Fire as well. Read Good Omens, helped me get into Pratchett (and Discworld naturally) and several of Gaiman's books.

Thanks a bunch though.

A Song of Ice and Fire for Fantasy.

For sci-fi you've got fuckloads of shit. For lack of a better term, good "entry level" sci-fi is Ender's Game and the sequel Speaker for the Dead. Both are good.
