The Council of Egypt — Leonardo Sciascia

Can't vouch for their translation, but in Italian they're all amazing.

He is a joy to read with incredibly unique prose and unique and interesting characters jumping all over the place meeting new and interesting characters. I find all his novel to be a fun adventure.

Joseph Conrad is great for this, influenced as he is by the tradition of adventure stories. The Secret Agent is beautifully written with a great plot, influenced Graham Greene etc.
