Why brave? Too Young to understand it, perhaps, not too young to have read it.

Finishing Ana Karenina I had a feeling that I was overwhelmed by its themes and simply could not articulate it all, although agreeing with what I believe is the central message of the book ( Loving one's neighbour and not seeking a corrupt life of indulgence, symbolised by the city life taken by oblonsky and Anna.) Although I understood some of it, i felt it too complex, as if a part of the work just flew over my head.

Am I too brainlet or too young to read the great works? Sometimes I read them and do not understand at all why they are indeed great works, and I'd rather doubt my capacity to understand them. Other times I just feel like I described just now, even though enjoying it.

Shall I give some time or try to read a more base literature?

Good for you, I really enjoy Jorge Amado.

You should read Morangos mofados, it's quite underappreciated and it is a very modern book, something like a beat book of disquiet in the 70ies. Even though it can't be Compared with the genius of Pessoa, it's an interesting read I got at the time for one reason or another and don't regret it.

What? I enjoy Cortazar short stories, but I absolutely despised his novel Hopscotch. The characters would start dropping names of philosophers, novelists and poets in the middle of conversations about the weather, It was too artificial and silly. It is a shame because the first chapters are great. What did you enjoy about it?
The invention of Morel was a little gem I found. This is the only book written by Casares I have read so far.

>3/5. how is that autobiography?
It was worth the read but some parts of it were really hard to get through. It felt like the Duce was embellishing rather boring events half the time and of course im not sure if you can really trust what he says about his own life.

I say this as a fascist. Mussolini was an admirable guy tho

They didn’t just namedrop philosophers, Wittgenstein was mentioned because the ideas were similar to that of Morelli. Also Horacio’s ‘anxieties’ were related to western philosophy more than anything, it wasn’t classic existentialism. I think the Morelli chapters explain very clearly what Cortazar was trying to do and imo he did it perfectly.

I read Morelli chapters, that doesn't explain why Horace would review the entire western canon and the I-ching while doing manual labor. The characters were all too unbelievable for me, everything felt silly.

I disagree, the parts where it would seem like Horacio might be taking himself too seriously had all a sort of irony and play on words that would relieve the seriousness. Plus the characters are all deep into art and philosophy, they were never out of character.

All 5/5 because just reading something doesn't determine anything; you could have loved a few of the books you've read, you could have hated them all - this board is for the discussion of literature, you're bound to read something shitty once in a while and this thread makes no sense
