Read Yvor Winters. He was a poet and critic who was staunchly pro-meter and helped discover many of the best poets of the latter 20th century. His "Defense of Reason" and "Forms of Discovery" have discussions on contemporary poets and is a good place to start knowing what to read. Other great underrated poets are Anthony Hecht and LE Sissman.
